Now testing is opt-out, not opt-in

The rate of false positives appears low on the surface. But the problem is that when there is low community prevalence, the odds of any positive result being false go up. The math isn't immediately intuitive, but if you think about it for a second, you'll get it. Basically if the chance of covid is 1/1000, and the chance of a false positive is 1/100, then it's MUCH more likely that you have a false positive than you have covid.

Now, if the consequences of a false positive are minimal, then NBD. But the problem is that the consequences of a false positive are currently considerable, because the child and possilbly the entire class will have to quarantine.

The answer to this problem IMO is more testing. If we had a "test to stay" policy where close contacts just tested every day and didn't have to quarantine, then the primary negative consequence disappears. Similarly, a positive rapid followed by a negative PCR should allow the child to return to school immediately (assuming no symptoms consistent with covid of course). That would mean the consequences of a false positive are drastically reduced to just missing maybe 2 days of school.

This exactly. If DCPS handled it this way, we would not opt out.

Did anybody else here get screened for scoliosis at school when we were kids? I did.

We also send dental mobile clinics to schools all the time to help kids who may not otherwise be getting checkups and cleanings.

Medical interventions at school are not new.

Did your parents sign you up or did the school do the tests without their consent unless they opted out?

COVID is different due to the public health emergency but your examples are not relevant here.

Testing should NOT be optional. Every one, regardless of vaccinated status, should be tested every single week during the school year, and failing that, should not be admitted to school until a negative PCR test can be provided.

Nope. That's not the policy. Many of us are opting out.

Why? you want to send your kid to school in person but you don't want to contrbute to keeping kids safe

DP but we all got the scoliosis test in DCPS. I am LOL at the idea that parents in the 70s would be trying to opt out --our parents had better things to do than wring our hands about stupid sh-t like this.

Up your nose, lady. The tests are invasive.

No they aren't. They are the same test DC.gov has free at every library. The swab is NOT deep and you run it three times aroun dinside of nose.

Because they are assholes. This is why the schools will shut down. Heard it here first.

It’s also not an up your nose test. It’s a spit test.

There is no legit reason to do screening testing on an asymptomatic vaccinated student in a school environment where everyone has the option of getting vaccinated. And I'm not risking the possibility that a false positive will derail my child's education.

I also happen to think the "opt out" model is illegal and the school district has no business doing medical testing on my child without my consent.

They don't recommend testing vaxxed students anyway.

Even the form says it's not recommended by DOH so I'm opting my vaccinated kids out. If they have symptoms I will have them tested them independently.

Exactly. I'm pretty annoyed that they didn't consider vaccination status when rolling out the testing program. It's so sloppy. And also pretty annoyed that DCPS is not even collecting vaccination status of its students. Based on the fact that the form itself says that testing is not recommended for my student I opted her out.

I understand that it was easier and much quicker for DCPS to opt everyone in but also glad I could immediately opt my kids out.

I agree. I'm opting out as well.

Its a waste. Kids are essentially at zero risk. 170,000 kids in DC and zero deaths. It's a waste of time.

It’s not a waste at all. Knowing if your child is positive helps you avoid breakthrough Covid.
