Primary has amazing sales and is less expensive than many of the places already listed in this post.

Even on sale, it's more expensive than Target, but it is great quality and long lasting (I have been able to sell everything after my 2nd kid goes through it).

Another place that hasn't been mentioned yet is Abercrombie kids. They have good sales and their jeans are great. Nordstrom Rack is also a good place to find nice things at decent prices.

Another PP mentioned Stitch fix and my DDs loved that. The quality isn't great, but the prices were reasonable and it's easy.

Good luck OP! I have three girls with very different tastes, so I spend way too much time searching for items.

This thread is over two years old.

My 10 year old likes kids section of Old Navy, Zara, and Ambercrombie. The regular section of H&M she likes their casual basic stuff comes in xxs and xs and fits like stuff in the kids section.

— public school bethesda mom who previously posted that most of my kids friends seem to wear mostly target stuff

The clothing called All That Motion at Target is very similar to Athleta. Athleta is overrated and boring. Target has all the basic items you would need like different color tees, shorts, underwear, etc. For more interesting clothes you can head to the mall and let her pick out some special hoodies or sweatpants.

Same. But I will say I really think it doesn’t matter at all. Just buy what you like and what they are willing to wear, if they have an opinion on it. I feel like I see everything from leggings and long sleeve tees, to jeans, sweatsuits, and everything in between. If you aren’t seeking out the weird, unusual, unique, I think it would actually be hard to get anything that wouldn’t just fit in.

I suppose some girls prefer athletic wear but mine does not and we buy at pretty common stores like Target, Old Navy, even Carter's (their big kid stuff is actually similar to Primary.com, lots of solids and stripes), and then buy on sale from Primary, Hanna (again, solids and stripes, not the floral stuff), Gap, and Nordstrom.

Similar. Children's Place is also good for basics, like sets of leggings, basic tees, etc. Mine also wore Target, Carters, Gap, Primary, Lands End, Eddie Bauer, etc.

My 4th grade DD likes Zara and Mango Kids. I think Lola and the Boys has great stuff but it's really expensive. My DD also likes Target.

Not for a 4th grader. Too babyish.

+1. t-shirts and hoodies associated with a sport are the trend at our school (summer swim shits, lax and soccer tournament shirts, bball camp shirts...). Lots of sporty stuff, some girls were starting to wear lululemon - parent of a 5th grader

My kids go to a private school with a dress code so they can't wear t-shirts and hoodies to school. Hanna Andersson does have some more mature patterns/prints that my fourth grade girl twins wear, but they definitely like less of it now than they did when they were younger.

Tea Collection can be hit or miss but their stuff is often a little more grown up than HA. Old Navy and Gap are the same - some stuff is cute/trendy and some is awful.

Do NOT by Hanna Andersson for a 4th grader if you are concerned with her being fashionable or fitting in. Same goes for Boden and Tea (although every once in a while you might find a more dress up out from those brands that don't look as babyish). I loved Hanna for my 3 year old, but by 4th grade it is a definite no.

My daughters get clothes from Old Navy, Target, Gap. Target has surprisingly decent and cute things for this age.
Nordstrom or Bloomingdales are good for nicer/more expensive things. H&M or Zara can have some things too, but more hit or miss.

Oh please, I just went to both Hanna Andersson and Gap and looked at their dresses and they were plenty that looked almost exactly the same.

Just avoid anything too dressy or too babyish (cartoon characters other than maybe marvel—there are others that would be not babyish but too hard for a clueless aunt to draw that line). Some girls like colors and patterns, some girls like more dark stuff, it’s all fine. When it doubt, go casual and comfortable.

Same at our school. But my 4th grader’s favorite is Zara.

Right, but how many fourth grade girls are still wearing dresses at all? I'm going to guess PP wasn't talking about dresses and leggings from Gap. Gap has plenty of tween style tops and pants that are cool and trendy and not HA style patterned leggings and play dresses. My DD won't wear dresses except for once in a blue moon, but when she does she wants to wear them with sneakers and boots like this: https://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=786791012&cid=6300&pcid=6300&vid=1&nav=expmore%3Aleftnav%3Agirls%3Acategories%3Adresses&cpos=50&cexp=2859&kcid=CategoryIDs%3D6300&cvar=25416&ctype=Listing&cpid=res24011010291126136803592#pdp-page-content

I agree about Primary- I have a older boy and younger girl and with the exception of a couple pairs of joggers that DS destroyed in the knees, I've been able to pass along everything DS wore to DD and it still looks good. But we have plenty of Cat and Jack too.

We certainly have some Hanna/Boden although tend toward the more basic solids, stripes, and gender neutral graphics. DD has never been into super cutesy girly stuff though, she'd rather wear big brother's old "I can dig it" tractor shirt than one with a unicorn.

All this to say that unless you know her preferences, I think buying a few things now but then taking niece out shopping once she's settled is a good idea- Target, Old Navy, Gap, H&M always have a decent selection in store.

ASK HER. By 4th, my ideas and my daughter's were totally off sync. Sit down in front of the computer with her and look at Target, Old Navy, Hayden Girls, Athleta, Abercrombie Kids. Stay away from Hanna Andersson and Boden unless you're buying leggings or something very basic. Mine has outgrown the cutesy stuff from those stores.
