Poll: Texting etiquette

Anonymous
Not to highjack the thread but since the discussion includes email...PSA: don't include a salutation or closing that references the time of day such as Good morning, Good Evening, etc. You have no idea when I'm going to read your email! If you decide to send an email at 10 pm, I'm not likely to see that email until the next day (specifically business emails), so it's irritating to be greeted with Good Evening or Have a good evening! when I read your email at 10 am.

Rant over.

My own DND is set from 10-7 so you will not disturb me.

If you are going to get a phone and text like a grownup, you can set a DND like a grownup.

This! I don’t want to be disturbed while sleeping. I don’t take my phone upstairs and the DND is 9:30-5:30

I leave my phone on but turn off text notifications when I go to bed. I don't know anyone who texts emergencies. They call.

I do use DND, but if you feel the need to send me non-emergency texts very early or late as a habit, I’ll drop you. It shows that you have a very inflated ego, to think that someone needs or wants to hear from you before sunrise.

This. I’m a nanny and my boss will just randomly text me at 11pm. Even if I’m awake, it annoys me hearing from my boss at that hour. Why can’t you use email??? I asked my boss to stop, she ignored me, so I not only muted her, but gave her a silent ringtone. Now when she texts me during the day at work, I don’t see her messages unless I check my phone. Natural consequences.

Hope you get fired.

DP, I think it's you who has the inflated ego if you expect everyone to know and contact you only with specific hours. Put your phone on silent, and it's no problem. People have different schedules and you/they respond when they can.

Also, why would you assume that someone who is texting you at 7am expects you to respond or read it at 7am? I text at all sorts of random hours with friends, and vice versa, and we all expect that sometimes hours pass between when a text is sent and when it's replied to.

Why would you text, instead of email, if you don't want a quick response?

This!

Text and email are two different platforms for different purposes. One is more immediate.

Hmm, DP but maybe that's where we differ. Text/email are not about "immediate" but length.

If I want to write you something longer, you get an email. A brief question/response, then text. But you respond to both when you're available - time of day is irrelevant thanks to phone options.

As with everything, texting is evolving. It might have started out as "immediate" but has become standard means of sending short messages. The only people I know who are resistant are people who are older and don't like change. Sorry. And I'm not in my 30s being snide.

^^ Nanny, do not mute your employer during work hours! Please do set boundaries as needed, such as "if you need to reach me on a non urgent matter after x pm, it'll be easier for me to receive it as an email."

I’m an early riser, and often try to get stuff done while the rest of the house is still sleeping, but wait to send texts until after 9am.

I shut my phone completely off when I'm sleeping. Why leave it on DND when you can turn it all the way off?

I sleep at conventional hours, so don't text between 11 pm and 7 am without a specific reason.

Relative was struck by a drunk driver overnight and we didn't get messages until morning. Have not kept my phone off at night since.

I apologize if this comes across as uncaring, but what could you have done if you had known at 2 am instead of 7 am?

I have both but turn my phone all the way off. Emergencies are why we keep a landline, if there is a problem with the parents/in laws or teens.

The good thing about DND is you can set it to let a call through if someone calls twice in a certain (short) time period as it suggests an urgency to the call.

It's good to turn cellphones all the way off occasionally. Is all this about DND or when to text because people under 35 don't have landlines any more?

I never email my friends. Do people still do that?

Ok I admit I'm over 50. I really don't want to deal with personal stuff during my work day so if you want to suggest getting together this upcoming weekend or something else non time sensitive, please email me. I only use text during the workday on my personal cell for time sensitive items.

Calmed down his passenger, who was in a complete panic when she couldn't reach anyone, and started making arrangements to get to the hospital sooner. That's what.
