Does anyone never/rarely clean their house?

my place would slowly just become a cluttered dusty mess, and then once a year i'd spend days cleaning and shoving things in closets if i had someone over. i also rarely cooked, which helped?

If you don't mind me asking, why did you rarely cook/clean?

probably for the same reason i never figured out how to make coffee until my 40s; it benefitted me to rebel against traditional "homemaker" tasks. i was taught thoroughly how to cook and clean and host parties but that wasn't what i wanted to do with my life. and then, too, depression is a powerful force for inertia. as for cooking regularly, the whole point of being in the city is that you can walk to somewhere new every night.

Sweeping/vacuuming once a month?! Does it not bother you to walk on debris all the time? Or let me guess... you just walk around in shoes all the time?

And change the sheets 2-3x A YEAR? A month, fine. But changing your sheets every 4-6 months is outright nasty.

I think your response gives us some insight. The people who have to clean excessively must generate more dirt somehow. Are you eating in bed? Is your child's sandbox in the living room? Or what medical condition do you have that requires daily vacuuming? I'm the PP who said I only vacuum the whole house once/month, and clean my kitchen (that includes sweeping) daily. I'm not sure what makes you think I'm walking on debris or living in filth. I don't get around to vacuuming the guest room except monthly, and yet there is no debris covering the floors. And yes we remove our shoes...perhaps you should try it!

I'm a once a month bedding PP. I am strict about no eating in bedrooms and nothing but water in bed. We don't have pets. Also, I sleep in pjs (long sleeve and full leg plus socks) because I always get cold in the night. I make my kids wear fresh pjs every night. So I guess that is part of the difference. (Also no shoes upstairs, no outside clothes in bed, no toys in the bedroom so that clutter stays downstairs). I'm sure there are other things I'm doing that makes the bedding and bedrooms stay a bit cleaner for a bit longer.

I dated a girl who was a slob. She was 30 and lived at home. I found stuff from High School on her bedroom floor. Yes 12-14 years earlier. She had not cleaned her room in 18 years. It was nasty. The bathroom even worse parents were hoarders etc. House is as a pigsty with no hot water, leaks, holes in wall. But it was a large house one block from ocean.

I always thought it be a tear down. Turns out house got flooded hurricane Sandy and they had to clear it out and flood insurance fixed it all. They sold it all redone for 1.2 million

No moral to the story

If you don’t clean, God will do it for you?

I'd say once a month is on the far side of normal. Skin and hair from one's head is still constantly shedding, and dust, and probably some drool and some eye crusties. One a month is more than twice as long as we go (typically every 10 days), but 2-3x a year pp is absolutely filthy. That's a hoarders or my-600lb-life situation.

Oh my, someone seriously only changes their sheets once a month? A week in the summer is too much.

Human bodies are constantly dropping, shedding and off-gassing all types of material. There are all sorts of creatures that thrive on that, and it's just dirty even without them. You can never fully get rid of these things but beds are where they thrive.

I guarantee anyone who goes a month to change sheets I could smell it in the house.

I have never mopped or dusted anything, ever. I would only vacuum or scrub the ring in the toilet bowl if I had company coming over. Bedsheets got changed 2 or 3 times a year. I'm just not bothered by it on a day to day basis. That said, it is nice to have the cleaner every other week so that I can have guests over without having to dedicate the day before to cleaning.

Excuse me, 2 or 3 times a *what* bedsheets?

And guess what happened as a result?????

Absolutely nothing.

Do you not have sex in your bed on a regular basis? Sheets need to be washed.

Super gross. All sheets in our home are cleaned every Monday no matter what. More often if needed. How do adults live like this?

It’s called depression.

I have a roomba that runs every other day. No pets, and that thing is full. I can’t imagine how much dirt there would be if I didn’t vacuum for a week, let alone a month

Anonymous wrote:It still amazes me that so many people hire housecleaners even if its just every other week. We never hired one growing up and mom did work full time (as well as my dad). None of my friends' parents hired cleaners growing up. We were solidly middle class. I don't have many friends now, but none hire cleaners (that I know of). My parents did end up hiring cleaners for a few years as empty nesters. My mom tried to talk to me into it. I know it makes sense and we can afford it. But I can't pull the trigger.

Part of the reason I don't hire a cleaner is because the house is a mess and dirty (which is ironic). We do comprehensive cleaning whenever guests are coming over which is maybe 2x a year now. I'll sweep the high traffic areas (including the kitchen) maybe 1x a week. (We don't have pets anymore.) I clean the bathrooms I use when they start to bother me and the main floor bathroom a little more often. I'll do a more complete clean of the kitchen maybe 1x a month. Randomly I may get inspired to sort-of deep clean another room like 1x a month.

So what the result/impact of this? The resentment I feel at having to be the one to do 95% of the cleaning. Otherwise no cleaning would ever get done. Not wanting to have people over because the house is too messy. I never really encourage my kids to invite other kids over to our house. I'll sometimes put off having repair people come over because I don't want them to see the messy house. I do think it can affect your mental state. After we've had people over and the house is still clean, its a nice feeling.

So maybe this year I'll aim to get the house clean enough to actually hire cleaners.

I grew up lower middle class with women who were domestic workers. They encouraged me to get a cleaner.
I’m surprised by people who say their husband doesn’t want to spend the money so they don’t have cleaners.
Are you SAHMs? Why can’t you pay for it? Does every expenditure need to be agreed to?

Also some of you sound disgusting and like you don’t wash your legs in the shower. Also reaffirmed why don’t eat at the company potluck.

I think real cleaning / deep cleaning could be called rare. But I do the basics daily stuff.

I wipe kitchen counters and sweep/stick vacuum the kitchen & dining area daily. I do pick up /declutter regularly, and there is really no way around doing laundry. I run the Roomba around the main living area most days. We have mostly hardwood + rugs, there is visible dust bunnies if something (sweeping or roomba) isn't done regularly. Love my roomba for this. Does carpet just hide this better? If something spills, we wipe it up. I do bedsheets weekly (sometimes skip a week). I have dust allergies and it helps immensely, and it is just part of the routine now.

Scrubbing bathrooms, dusting surfaces, cleaning windows, and even mopping is much less frequent. I swish the toilet and wipe down counters and sinks when it looks like they need it. Bath / shower monthly at best. I use a "real" vacuum on the rugs only a few times a year. I'm thinking of getting a 2x monthly cleaner to handle this kind of stuff, but also, the level of mess doesn't bother me much, so I've been putting it off.

We don't have a schedule and we don't have cleaners. We clean things when they seem dirty. The only exceptions are eating and food prep surfaces which are cleaned after use.
