It is a strange story indeed. Look, its quite clear who benefits from a higher voter turnout with more 'newbies' to the caucus voting- Miranda. So it is in Miranda's interest to clear away participation hurdles and its in Mary's interest to lay them down. Mary's campaign spins out this bizarre story about being able to 'record votes' on borrowed devices. Mary asks Miranda to sign a pledge that she won't let any campaign volunteer lend someone their device to vote. Miranda (rightfully) refuses to agree. Not b/c she has a 'plan' to harvest votes, but rather b/c she is not going to make wierdo rules for her campaign volunteers. E.G. if a volunteer is out stumping at a farmers market and someone says Oh I'd really like to vote but I'm confused by the process etc- that volunteer can, if they choose, and the voter is interested, whip out their tablet and let the person vote. Its hardly nefarious- its increasing participation- something the dems always gave lip service to wanting.... |
i can't bring myself to care. Neither of these fabulous women can change the silly slug that is the APS school board. |

Finally got around to watching some of the various forums and decided to vote for Miranda. I disagreed with some of her RTS views but overall find her to be smart, thoughtful and has proven this year to be willing to put her neck out there on controversial issues (even where I disagreed). The thing that bothers me most about APS school board is that they are basically lumps on a log that do nothing. I’d like at least one person there that holds loft’s feet to the fire. Mary seems just like more of the same. Nothing really differentiating about her. |
That's my perspective too! I think Dr. Duran seems like he could be great over the long term. I think the middle management (especially Loft) has failed on several key issues and Miranda would press them WAY WAY WAY more than the current SB. Frankly, a lot of my teacher friends agree about Loft. That's why I feel like it's even more dire to elect Miranda - I don't want to lose the amazing teachers and staff that APS has!!!! APS's SB (and Arlington's County Board) would benefit from a reality check. Voting Miranda in would send a message that they (leadership) let our kids down this year. |
Yes, agree. I am not in APE or any of the various Facebook groups so I don’t really know about all the drama, but my teacher friends think Miranda is better, and I agree with pretty much everything she says so I voted for her. Really hope she can move things on the right direction, we certainly do not need more of the same. |
I decided to sit this race out. Both Turner and Kadera were complicit in the vitriol that was spewed by our community over the past year. I just can't support either of them. |
If you support screaming at the teachers and the school board to open at the height of the winter surge - Turner. |
|
Taking it out of quotes I'm glad you said this. I don't like either candidate for the same reasons, but I feel like I have to vote for one of them. I should see if there's an option for write-in. |

Exactly! All of the teachers I know are voting for Miranda. Their jobs would have been easier this spring to be back in school 4-5 days. Miranda fought for that, Mary didn’t. Mary said 2 days was fine. I was talking with friends yesterday about voting. One friend pulled one of her kids for private at the semester mark and two of her kids stayed in APS. Said, “Speaking as someone who has one child in school 5 days a week, it is glorious. Even if my older kids started 4-5 days a week now for a month, it would make a huge difference.” Everyone in the group I was chatting with had already voted for Miranda. |
The teacher I know who was screamed & cursed at by an angry APE dad on Teams - during class - probably would NOT vote for APE/Turner. But she doesn’t live in Arlington so she won’t get a voice. |
Sounds like that dad was inappropriate, at the end of his rope or a combination of both. Miranda did not yell at teachers. She does not control what all members of APE do, just as Mary didn’t control the McKinley PTA mom that screamed at the school board. The teachers I know that reside in Arlington and can vote are voting for Miranda. |
I’m an APS teacher and have a wide circle of APS teacher friends. No one I know is thinking about voting for Miranda. We think of her as one of the crazy APE people from the Facebook group and the ones screaming about lazy teachers and unions at the board meetings (APS does not have a majority union). |
