Double depositing

The school is closed to all visitors right now.

So, OP, after nearly everyone telling you it is both against the rules and immoral you are still considering doing it?

Why did you even ask then?

I didn’t ask for opinions on the ethics - I asked if anyone else was considering it. Keep up. In a normal year I would
Agree with some of the PPs but this is not a normal year.

Have you contacted the school?
Have your son reach out to them and tell them that he is seriously considering the school, but is unsure because they have not offered tours, and ask if there is a student they could connect him with to answer any questions he may have. I a, sure they would be willing to work with him. They may offer an outdoor tour. They may offer to extend the deadline. But if you double deposit and he gets rescinded, these two schools are gone forever.

I affirm that I will send an enrollment deposit (or equivalent) to only one institution; sending multiple deposits (or equivalent) may result in the withdrawal of my admission offers from all institutions. [Note: students may send an enrollment deposit (or equivalent) to a second institution where they have been admitted from the waitlist, provided that they inform the first institution that they will no longer be enrolling.]

So, you're going to tell your child, who is about to make their first consequential adult decision, that integrity means nothing? Hope that works out for you . . . and your kid.

A favorite saying in our law firm: When in doubt, READ THE AGREEMENT.

Absolutely -- as a lawyer, wife of a lawyer and mother of a soon-to-be-lawyer, I couldn't agree more.

Lol, you "didn't ask for opinions on the ethics". That's EXACTLY what you did. You wanted people to tell you it was OK, and they told you the opposite.

I asked if anyone else was silly. Yes I have called the school. The school in question is completely shut down and in an area that still requires quarantine and even after that we would still not be allowed to visit. Add to the mix that we are not vaccinated and the CDC is still requesting people limit unnecessary travel so yeah - sorry our ethics are so poor that we put not spreading a deadly virus ahead of essentially giving a school a free $800-1000.

As has been explained, but apparently needs repeating: This is not about "giving a school a free $800-1000". It's that it is both against the rules and unfairly takes a place from another student.

Please tell me you understand this: That it is both against the rules and unfairly takes a place from another student

And no one else here is doing it.

Because it is both against the rules and unfairly takes a place from another student.

CDC recommendations haven't stopped many people from traveling for college visits.

What would give me pause is that this school is still shut down and in a location requiring quarantine - seems a good bet they aren't planning a normal fall. It's unfortunate, but that would weigh heavily against enrolling at that school.

And get you family vaccinated ffs. There is no excuse.

OP, all the kids are in the same boat. My DD wasn't able to visit any of the out-of-state schools she applied to, and won't be able to before putting down a deposit. Your son can learn about the school virtually, just like all his peers are doing.

I agree. Please don't forget that many kids from last year were in similar situations, having to make final decisions on schools with minimal data. My kid chose a school because it offered his desired major, had a good reputation in the field and offered him significant financial aid. He attended online meetings and programs but never saw the school itself until he moved in for the start of freshman year. It really didn't make any difference. His attitude was he was there and he would make the best of it. He likes the school and has made friends; most of all he is grateful for having in-person college.

The senior child of a friend of mine mentioned casually the other day that she knows many seniors who have put in deposits at multiple schools this year. So I guess this practice is more common than we realize? Is anyone else doing this?

Why resurrect a year old post. No, I don't know any of my friend's kids (and we are friendly with many of the parents) who have done this. Make a decision and move on.

Bc it is relevant to this year as well. Why are you so rude?

Briefly considered that. Legally, it seems you would be breaking an agreement if you applied through common app. Not sure if it is enforceable. Ethically, there were tons of comments in the thread about taking other kids spot. I don’t think that is accurate unless you hold the extra spot past June when waitlists close.

Because you know it’s wrong, just as it was wrong last year.

Don’t do this. Figure out what further information you need from the colleges to decide, then contact the schools to figure out how to get that information. There will be no sign from the heavens

I would not do double depositing without a compelling reason. You had at least 1 month to decide. More time is not going to make a difference. However, I would have no issue with accepting a WL offer and holding the regular decision offer until I had enough time to research the WL school. Two days they give you to accept WL is not enough.
