| Maybe the wife cheated on the husband and the younger kid is her lover's child? And he wouldn't want the kid taking his last name? Just a thought. |
I have a friend from Tibet. He had a son here in the US and he told me (years ago) that he decided to give his son his same last name. It was the first time his family had a surname. That it was not common in his culture. |
| I believe in Chinese naming convention the family name is first, then the given name. Op may just be thinking everyone has a different last name because it came second. |
| Are you dense? Two parents have different last names, so they compromised on the children each having a last name. I know two families that did this. Do I think it's stupid? Yes. But are they allowed to name their kids whatever the hell they want? Again, yes. |
+1 I'm not even married to my partner and don't have the same last name as him or my child, and literally has never ever been a problem to travel, pick up medication, etc. Also, I have 4 siblings and 2 of them have a different last name and again, has never ever been an issue to not share a last name. We can all identify our siblings and our mom, without sharing a last name. |
