When I served I never can close to doing anything like that. Military bases are like small cities, they have nearly every career imaginable. |
I'm of this same gut reaction, and I say this as the spouse of a veteran and member of a military family. If it were my kid and it was a thirst for public service he's after, that's a good and noble thing. And I would produce the laundry list of alternative ways to serve society. |

As long as it wasn't the Army! My late father was a career USAF officer.
I'd be supportive and proud. |
A young adult who probably does not knows what he is doing. |
If your kid is still so idiotic that he doesn't know what he's doing and can't make his own life choices even after four years of college, then he probably wouldn't make the cut to be in the military in the first place. They don't accept just anyone you know. |
Head in the sand. WHY do all of those little cities exist? To support the "trigger pullers" (miitary jargon) |
They exist so you and millions of other people can enjoy many freedoms that otherwise would have been destroyed by enemies of the US. |
Sorry but this is how many Americans feel. You may not like to hear it, but that does not change how they feel. They have a right, especially since taxpayers support EVERY service member's salary, benefits, equipment, etc. |
No, this anti military stance is the outlier. Even among moderates and democrats. It’s the DC bubble. |
This made me lol |

What $ is great money? |
Do you know how to read? OP’s Q is, “ How would you feel” if DS joined the military after college? Pay attention. |
I think a lot of PPs are not going back and looking at this post above by the OP. It's pretty vital information for addressing OP's question rather than just opining about military service in general. The DS is not focused on some particular career path right now, nor is he focused on the military because he sees it as public service and he's devoted to public service, nor is he a "true believer" in the military mission. He's a teenager who thinks it "sounds like a cool adventure." All the more reason for him to finish college FIRST and see how he truly feels after that, when he's four years more mature. My money would be on his not being interested after four years away at college mostly doing his own independent thing. If he is still interested at that time, he'll be a better bet to commit and stick with the military than he probably is as a teenager just seeing it as a cool adventure. |
Which enemies and which freedoms were being attacked? How were these freedoms in danger of being destroyed? Please give examples. |
