How would you feel if DS joined the military after college?

The majority of members of the military will never see combat. Even in wartime. Only about 1/4 of the military members of my extended family and DH’s extended family have ever seen combat. Most were in support roles of some kind.

Right, supporting combat.

Or readiness (for combat).

There are more noble life pursuits, IMHO (though I know that is not PC in this era)

Wacko. The military is to protect and preserve our way of life, which (with all its problems) is the last best hope for humanity.

They preserve our way of life by killing people. Yes they do a lot of other things but the primary is to serve in conflict.

No boot camp or active military service for my child with anaphylactic allergies and asthma.

If there’s another way to have a career associated with national security, then sure.

Fine as long as America gets out of all wars and won't start any wars any time again.

Can't you picture Trump sending our young men and women to defend that Saudi Prince who had a Washington Post journalist murdered? Yah, not signing up for the likes of that!

If the American gov't, in its current iteration, is humanity's best hope. We are ALL screwed, big time!

(Can't punch their way out of a pandemic that countries with many fewer resources have beaten down. Virtually no rule of law anymore. Few checks and balances between branches of government. Corruption at every turn. It's a s*__ sh__!)

If he wants an adventure he can join the peace corps. The military is a machine where they train the individualism out of you and teach you how to kill people in the most efficient way. I saw this as a wide of someone who did join the marine corps out of college.

Scarey, and we pay for this.

I would prefer he didn't. You?

My son has been interested in the military for years. We convinced him to get a college degree first, which he is doing. If he ultimately decides on the military after college it's his choice and we will be proud of him.

This. I’d be fine with my kids joining after getting a four degree. I’m 42 and have a bunch of friends who did that, men and women. They were pilots, doctors, engineers, etc in the military and are now retiring after 20 years of service with excellent benefits. Those who are slightly older finished a few years ago and quickly got hired in the civilian world making great money.

I'd much rather have my son and daughter serve and get good job skills than live in my house as underemployed basement dwellers.

Oh another military bashing thread, how lovely.

U.S. military is an occupying force in several countries. Invader, like Nazi Germany was. So, heck no. If U.S. politics did not make the U.S. military into occupators then yes.

Military is the weapon of the government. Bashing U.S. government. I have no desire to have my child invade, bomb, drone kill people in another country.

How did it protect your/our way of life by invading Iraq?

I would feel like I failed as a parent.
