Am I a loser because I watch Jersey Shore?

Anonymous
I dunno--I'm Italian-American, from a NYC borough, and have family in NJ. Guys and gals like this do indeed exist in real life, my horrified friends.

Also, among ourselves, we use the word Guido. It's really just shorthand, and uber-descriptive for, yes, a "type." The suggestion that it is even in the ballpark of being as horrifying and offensive as the "N" word is astounding. Really.

I even got my WASP husband into Jersey Shore.

Also, I have never seen fist pumping before as a dance move. I've never heard this expressions, "He's creeping on her."

It's like I'm watching a National Geographic special. I'm watching some undiscovered tribe, only they live in a group house in Seaside Heights.

Exactly! I watched JS for the first time this weekend - my sister (lawyer - maybe there is something to this?) and her husband were visiting, and they put it on, so we watched the first episode. I felt like I was watching a documentary of one of those anthropologists from the mid 20th century who did research on what they considered an "uncivilized" tribe and came back and reported their findings. I couldn't believe that people really dress and act like that. I lived in NJ for a few years (but in a totally different NJ than the JS version), and I had never seen anything like what JS depicted.

I enjoyed watching it at the time, but after I was done, it just made me so sad. I don't think I'll watch anymore.

Does the watching Jersey Shore part make me a loser???

No, but voting for Howard Dean did.

That's just asinine.

Does anyone else find it somewhat interesting that there appears to be a disproportianately high number of attorneys addicted to Jersey Shore? Just wondering.

Wonder if the can spell "disproportionately" any better than I just did?

I suppose this same person uses the N word. There's lowbrow, and there's white trash. Nope, on second thought, they're the same. Education doesn't cancel out the trash in white trash.

you realize, of course (because you are so high brow) that by adding "white" you are implying that "trash" is black (or something other than white). so who's stereotyping now?

Now THAT is just asinine. Take away the "white", and it is all encompassing. Add the "white", and it just that--"white trash".

Why would someone use horrible names to describe "their own kind"? Do you hate yourselves that much?

Considering 1 out of 10 people in the DC area is an attorney, no, this is not surprising.

Dunno. People do it though. Maybe it shows control over something they used to have no control over when it was used negatively.
