MLS clubs apparently adrift too. Their plan for MLS only league appears to have fallen apart (silly idea in the first place if you ask me). Right now DCU don't even know what age groups they will have or even if they will have any youth teams at all. I'm hearing they may cut back to just U15 and U17, and they will likely not be making it free as they had planned.

There has also been talk about copying what Liga MX does, they have U17 and U19 travel with the full team and they play against the respective Liga MX teams at the away location. So just a couple age groups, but who knows.

And DCU is going to pay for this?

Major League Soccer announced the launch of a new elite youth competition platform intended to provide year-round high-level matches for MLS club academy teams and non-MLS academy teams that previously participated in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy which ceased operations.

The new platform will provide elite competition against domestic and international teams, and MLS is evaluating expanding participation to include clubs beyond the former Development Academy.

“Major League Soccer is deeply committed to developing world-class players through an elite competitive pathway, from our academy teams through the professional game,” said Todd Durbin, MLS EVP of Competition & Player Relations in a statement. “As we look ahead to the 2026 FIFA MLS World Cup here in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, now more than ever it is incumbent on us to establish a competition that sets a new standard for elite youth play and allows athletes to achieve their full potential.”

“We are seeing significant contribution to the quality of play in MLS from homegrown talent,” said Jeff Agoos, MLS Senior Vice President of Competition, Operations, and Medical Administration, two-time World Cup veteran with the U.S and five-time MLS Cup winner. “As we currently have 2,500 elite players and 250 top youth coaches in our academies, MLS is uniquely positioned to provide a new and enhanced platform that will include high quality coaching, professionalized environments and enhanced player identification.”

The new platform will include league season matches and both regional and national tournaments with international teams. It will also expand coaching education and improve the approach to player identification to ensure top players have the opportunity to participate in a high-level development environment.

“Participating in high quality, competitive matches on a consistent basis is essential to the development of our young players,” said Fred Lipka, Vice President and Technical Director of MLS Player Development. “Launching this new competition will allow us to consistently challenge players, staffs and teams, optimizing the potential of every player on the field.”

In addition, MLS is evaluating the potential to provide future competition opportunities for girls.

This is PP. If the MLS league news is true, which it apparently is as of now, DA will be replaced by..... DA plus? Which non-MLS teams will be in it? In this area, Baltimore and Bethesda, maybe Arlington? With PDA, PA Classics, and a few others? But why have Richmond and VDA then joined ECNL? The confusion (and mystery) deepens.

In other words, we will retain a league for MLS development clubs, former non MLS DAs, and potentially new members who are really good on the boys side and who have not gone to ECNL. So in the grand scheme of things, get rid of girls DA and expand boys DA. If only we could believe anything these guys say at all. Now we will all speculate about who in the area aside from DCU, Bethesda, Arlington and Armour may play, and whether it will be based on clubs or individual teams. VDA went to ECNL so they are out.

It’s a non-starter for some time. Did anyone watch the evening news?

Maybe by 2021 they will have this worked out. I don’t think anyone is playing until next Spring at the earliest which truly sucks for rising HS juniors/seniors.

Does anyone think what they call this sh@t makes any difference?

People should be more concerned that they throw up new leagues and ideas every 2-3 years and parents chase the laser beam like a cat.

They think this next thing will be “it”.

It won’t. Lather, rinse, repeat. US soccer sucks.

+1,000,000

They will have competitive parents fighting amongst one another instead of banding together to call them on their BS.

It’s how they’ve been able to function for decades. Pit families/players against one another and fight for who gets the moniker “elitist”. All the while g th he product and execution is pure sh@t.

So the DA is going to basically continue on led by the MLS teams, and there are going to be no VA teams ?

Nobody should care. The number of elite players has not changed. The number of clubs has not changed. What difference does this make on the boys side? Even better if they just left it at DCU for U16 and above. The rest is nonsense - chutes and ladders and smoke and mirrors.

It’s a professional club. I would hope the youth players in the academy are soaking in all the benefits of a professional club instead of the mighty Coach XYZ who has been preaching kickball since God knows when
