If you're 53, your parents married at a time when women couldn't open bank accounts, the only jobs available were secretary/nurse/teacher, and going to college was considered a dream for anyone outside of the rich class.

As for you getting married at 23 -- I'm curious did you do anything different from your mother? Get a degree? Use it? Open a business? Establish a profession?

Married at 22 to a 24 year old. Met at an ivy. We put each other through grad school and after 7 years of marriage, pregnant with first child. High household income. We are happy. Not sure what the issue is??

Are you religious? Not being rude, genuinely curious. I know a lot of very religious and well educated people, esp. LDS, and many married shortly after undergrad and were married in grad school.

My parents don't regret marrying young, they are happy together and yes she had options. She was able to open a bank account (that started happening for women in the 60s), she did get a college degree over the next several years (and later, a masters) and by the time they retired, she made more than my dad.

NP but at 23, I was engaged with a master's and yes, over my 20s established a career including published works.

Just because you married later doesn't mean that is the only way to a successful future or marriage.

Good question. We were but we aren’t anymore. I realized that we basically got married while many of our friends continued to live together and are now getting married. I guess either way works but I really loved that we were fully committed to a vision of our future lives together rather than worrying about whether we would stay together or not. I’m not religious anymore but one thing I like about religion is that it does make men step up earlier and commit and I definitely benefited from that approach. Some of my friends still have guys that they are essentially forcing to commit whereas my husband was looking for a wife in college.

Yep, I’m the pp. The ages of marriage are typical for my LDS friends. Right after college with the man being about 2 years older because of the time spent away on mission.

I just watched their wedding episode and it just strikes me as so outrageously selfish all over again that they wouldn't wait for the pandemic to end so Chandler's family could be there.

There was NO NEED whatsoever for them to get married without his family there. I don't know what religion they are but wonder if they didn't believe in premarital sex and they were just horny. If my son got married without me there, I would be outrageously hurt. They keep saying they just want to get married before the world changes, but wtf does that even mean? They have no issues with having to get married for citizenship issues or health insurance issues, they both have job security, etc.

Well, that's kind of it, right? I find it hurtful as well, but....at the end of the day it's like, "wanna F*ck?" That's their thing.
