It’s an honest thread...the data is there.

It shows how uneducated people are. An the fact most college educated cannot point to Iran is even more disturbing. I fully get some backwoods inbred - but a “college” educated person?

Honestly I know enlisted military members with more geopolitical knowledge of the region than I do college educated armchair politicians.

I was just recently at USMA and asked if a statue near the library in a corner was General Patton (the sign had been hidden by shrubbery and thought it was but sought verification). There are only 2 statues on that campus that I saw and one is General Eisenhower that presides over Eisenhower plaza in a very central location. The cadet had just finished practicing drills on Eisenhower plaza. He answered that he thought that statue in the corner was Eisenhower. We pointed out that the central statue was Eisenhower and he said he thought we were wrong. These two men do not look anything alike and knowing that the entire field is called Eisenhower plaza should tell you that the statue directly in the center would be of him. Then we were on a bus asking about the historic chapel (largest building on campus with a huge spire overhead and a cadet said he wasn't sure where it was. So no I don't think cadets know more about geography than your average DMV resident that has to navigate all of this traffic and deal with people from all over the world. Resident of the US - sure we have many barely literate people in red and blue states. It's unfortunate that republicans are scared of universities in the US because this is a huge problem I see happening to America. Forget about other countries. We have our own educational problems right here in the US.

Interesting, and not surprising upon reflection. If you always have someone telling you information, you never have to retain it yourself. Agree education system needs revitalization. Even something as simple as knowing how to read a map or navigate terrain and look for context clues, that should be taught. Teachers aren’t the same, either are institutions. But the military service members. They should absolutely learn a sense of direction. Coming in like this as fresh cadets yes, that is concerning.

Right, and there are NEVER daily threads attacking Trump voters or Republicans in general that are probably started by female Democrats. You can certainly dish it out, but seem unable to take it. How very curious.

You can see who starts each thread in the Political Forum?? Are you one of the mediums?

Wouldn't be a thread in the Political Forum without the requisite GOP whataboutism.

Nope. I just have a working brain and the ability to infer, based on the moderator’s own comments, that the vast majority of posters here are liberal women. Have a great night, liberal woman!

Epic fail. I'm a dude.

Not much of a working brain there. Just knee-jerk GOP BS.

Biologically, maybe. But your brain self identifies as a liberal woman.

LOL.

You would be surprised how anti data people are around here.

I’m much, much, much more concerned about all the voters in Trump Country if they were.
They think Iran is IN THEIR STATE and want to BLOW IT UP.

WTAF

Well, to be fair, many of them probably can't find their own state on the map, let alone Iran.

It was in the spring so not sure if they were frosh or not. Let's hope so. Our child's middle school in the DMV had short geography course kids could take, I've seen geography bee's lately in elementary schools, and when given an option between integrated and siloed core classes, a huge group of children decided to sign up for integrated classes, so I am hoping things are moving in a good direction. No idea if this is happening all over the US or not. From talking to various republican VA state legislators on the state education committees, I was appalled to hear that they did not even support public schools generally and preferred most kids attend private or homeschool. It's one thing to want change and options. It's another to block funding and or even to vote for regulations that might end up reducing funding and excellence in schools just because you don't support public schools and prefer private. The republicans are going to have to be more pro-public education if they want my respect on educational insights. Electing Betsy DeVos is not moving in the right direction. Until then, while I am aware that some democratic women are not that well educated (and lets not forget often poorer), nothing makes me believe that republican women are as a rule more educated.

And the USA bears no blame whatsoever?

ALL of the problems in the Middle East are associated with Iran?

Not Iran
Not Iraq
Not Afghanistan
Not Syria
Not Jordan
Not Lebanon
Not Saudi Arabia
Not Lebanon
Not Qatar
Not United Arab Emirates
Not Palestine

You are missing Yemen which we seem to be attacking as well.

Statistically, they aren't.

- more college educated lean D
- younger women have more education than older women, and they lean D, but other than the silent generation, older women tend to lean D too.

However, I would not say that just because you have a degree, you know where Iran is.

But ITA about Rs and education. I used to be a R before having kids. Now that I have kids, education and health care are high up on my list of priorities, and Rs are doing a pi$$ poor job in both areas.

Only 28%
Only 20% of women below the average (men were 38%, nearly double)
27% of democrats (28% of republicans and 31% of independents)

College educated were more successful (only 38% which shows me college fails us as a country)

So it appears a majorly of women Democrat voters bitching about Trumps policies cannot even point to Iran on a map.

Meh, this is a bit silly. You don't really need to know exactly where Iran is on a map to know how/why bombing it might matter? Also, with technology, you don't really need such geography skills as much when you can look it up in 5 seconds if you wanted to.

If you are making the broader point that much of the voting populace is under-informed...well, duh.

Ohhhh pathetic pathetic argument, and I am against Trump!!!!! “You don’t really need such geography skills” - ouch. Glad you are not running public education. Or are you?? It’s the fault of our schools that most Americans don’t know this (this is not college level info, btw). However — My middle schoolers is studying Middle East geography right now, and I was very pleased to see that.

Did you miss the "as much" part. Try reading more carefully next time. The information the human brain retains adjusts with available technology. No biggie.

Exactly my point with technology!

I don't see this as a big deal. What percentage of people in Iran can identify Colorado on a map of the US?

Jus to be pedantic on a thread about geography failings. Neither Iran nor Afghanistan are in the Middle East!

Pointless. They're Middle East for all intensive purposes.

First of all.. CO is a state within a country; Iran is a country in the Middle East region, not a state.

Secondly, have they bombed CO?

Third, I don't really care, do you?
