NP here following along. DH and I watched over the weekend and have two more episodes to go. We think the coach is so cold and weird. Totally not motivational at all. It seems a lot of others here think the same. Maybe being all strict and no smile is how gymnastics and cheer is coached but it certainly doesn’t look like she’s an omg so amazing coach. She seems bored and disappointed. Somebody upthread described here as detached and that is spot on. I will still watch! Like these young kids getting their footing! |
Again, these aren’t young kids who are trying to figure out if they love a sport. These are serious athletes. Are winning college (and even professional) football and basketball coaches hugging and smiling their players? Are they out there coddling players? For people who have never coached or been coached this is bizarre. Elite sports with winning teams aren’t coddling and praising every thing an athlete does. |
| New poster here, but lady, you need to calm down a little bit with all of your posts. I think it is safe to assume that most people on this thread are NOT professional coaches or have been coached at an “elite level.” Just because you have a different take on coaching does not mean that other people can’t have their own takes on what seems to be a detached style of motivation that they see in a TV show and discuss on an Entertainment board. |
Ma’am, there have been multiple people posting explaining elite coaching. You seem to somewhat know how a message board works but still seem to be confused and upset. Just because you want to be able to say whatever and have no one disagree isn’t how this works. You can have whatever misinformed take you want to have just like anyone can comment a different take. If you don’t want anyone to disagree then don’t post. That way you won’t feel the need to be so arrogant and condescending. |
| I think what people are getting annoyed with on this thread is that it seems to be the same person posting over and over again that everybody is dumb for not understanding how elite coaching allegedly works. |
|
I’m one of the posters explaining how elite coaching works. I’m annoyed that people seem to think only one person is posting this. It’s like people have no idea how threads work and that more than one person can post about how coaching and Allstars work.
So yeah, I’ll call you dumb for... 1. Dismissing people who actually are trying to explain elite coaching and 2. For not realizing that there are multiple people posting. I’m not sitting here claiming that there is only one person posting over and over again that Monica is detached. |

I grew up doing gymnastics and ballet, and even though I wasn't a cheerleader, I totally would be comfortable with Monica's coaching style.
Even by the age of 11, if I got hurt, I didn't need someone to fuss over me and say "oh you poor thing, I'm so sorry you got hurt, that must have been so scary!" - what I needed was to get fixed up, get told how long I'd be out, and what physical therapy to do and when. Monica's smiles and frowns may be subtle, but that feedback would be plenty for me. You don't need your coach to inspire you. Your love of the sport/art inspires you. Your teammates inspire you. I actually really disliked L'Darius's coaching style in the last episode and didn't think he was a good coach. |
| I had an AAU basketball coach exactly like Monica when I was a teen and she's still one of my greatest role models. Discipline, heart, hustle! Our coach (also like Monica) would get silly with us every once in awhile, but on the court she was a beast! |
That's exactly what it means! |
| I liked Monica. She wasn't over the top, she was solid like a rock. I teared up at the part where she talked about arguing with her pastor about being gay, given how clear it was that the boys were surrounded by hostility for that in that town and college, and how isolating it must have been. |
I had a hard time confirming this. Plus, most if the big universities are in some other kind of very similar cheerleading. |
To win national champion means you are the best in your division (junior college, all girl, co-ed large, co-Ed small) to win Grand National Champion means you had the highest score of the day at that competition. The winner represents a snapshot in time at that event. It’s not comparing an Acro and tumbling team at the University of Oregon to Navarro. |
| On episode 4 here. The boys have more drama than the girls! |
|
I don't get what happened at the competition. I don't want to spoil it for others watching, but how is what happened allowed?
I looked on YouTube to see an entire 2 minute routine and they are fantastic. Bummer Varsity sports wouldn't let them film at the competition. |
| The bigger colleges like UK are in a different kind of cheerleading apparently called UCA. |
