Cheer on Netflix

Netflix sent me an email about a new show this morning. I was intrigued because, oddly, I always enjoy cheerleading-themed shows. Bring it On is a classic movie to me! And I’ve watched too many episodes of Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team to comfortably admit. Now I feel better though because the Post critic likes the new show: https://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/tv/netflixs-cheer-is-the-documentary-that-hard-working-cheerleaders-have-long-deserved/2020/01/08/2f8ee890-2e59-11ea-bcb3-ac6482c4a92f_story.html! Can’t wait to start it.

I’m on episode 3 and am enjoying it

Binged it this week and enjoyed it. Not too proud to admit I got a little teary in the last episode — they were so emotional and worked so hard.

I started watching earlier this week, I like it so far. I was a cheerleader growing up and I didn’t perform at the level these kids do, I did have friends who were on competition teams so I’m kind of familiar with that world.

It’s pretty good. I enjoyed the featured boys, particularly- they have personality plus! The big take away for me was how many serious injuries were sustained throughout the short season. It really made me question whether this is a sport that we should be supporting. It seems sooooooo dangerous!

I watched it. I’m so glad I don’t have a kid interested in competitive cheerleading. They risk their physical well being every time they practice and compete.

What age would this be good for? Would a 12 year old like it?

I started watching it and my husband even got sucked in. I think we're towards the end of the series.

Watched it with my 14 yo. She does cheerleading but not at that level. We both enjoyed it but there injuries were intense.

So good. It’s hard not to binge watch all the episodes.

Is it just me or are Gabi Butler's parents pretty messed up?

^They are show biz parents x10 in all the nasty ways. Every comment from them was negative, nagging, rude. And Gabi just sat and took it respectfully, which I both kind of admire and cringe at. Gabi is 21 so her own person but the ties seem so binding right now.

This line from her dad - "are you watching your diet? jackfruit will fill you up for 10-12 hours."

I am from the same “club” gym most of the students featured are. I’m 25 so I have actually competed with or against quite a few. I think the documentary highlighted the injuries which makes it appear much more common than it really is (I’m not discounting injuries, just think they are highlighted disproportionately). Also, college cheerleading like this is done on a floor with no springs as opposed to “club” which is more similar to a floor in gymnastics. This level of cheerleading does come with risk, however, many of these people have been tumbling at a high level for 12+ years, so it’s finally all caught up with them.

Also, when the woman with the dog asks Gabi's mother, which one her daughter is, and the mother replies, "I don't know . . . she has black hair." As in, "my daughter is a HUGE celeb but I want to appear modest so . . . "

I felt that the mother seemed attention seeking, but Gabi comes off quite well.
