nobody was waiting for your opinion

+1 story is a bit too convenient

It is beyond absurd to cover this is national news EVEN IF it turns out it was true.

Yes, white people do know the word nappy. And, guess what genius? It has nothing to do with "caring about her hairstyle." The same way rape has nothing to do with sexual attraction.

I hate to be this way, but i don't think there's anything extraordinary about the incident. One of my kids -- white -- was bullied like that by a few mean neighborhood boys at that age (also white). Some mean kids do what they can with what they have on hand. I don't think the grandparents should be in tears over this -- pissed, yes, but in tears on the news? And I don't see anyone trying to put it in perspective. This is not racism run amok.

PP, here. Also, I believe the girl. Sadly. Witnessed something similar at a local rec center. Went immediately to the boss, but the girl denied it, because she didn’t want to lose her friends. Staff started giving me a weird vibe, so I left.

It's true that few appear to be waiting for anything. The allegations, including on-going bullying as well as this terrible incident, are heartbreaking. But the initial reports and reaction by the media and on this board while the investigation is ongoing give me a feeling of deja vu.

I can recall two painful incidents in my childhood when something of a comparable nature happened to me. The kids who did it to me were white. I am white.

Sometimes kids are just bullies. Sometimes kids are nasty. Sometimes they are awful. Frankly, without adult guidance most would be.

Wrong, nappy is a word that white people don't use. Unless a white person is a hair stylist and has black customers they wouldn't know what nappy means.

Waiting for the Gofundme account.

I don't know about the DC area, but where I'm from (Tidewater), white people definitely knew this word.

The word nappy is used in many songs I’ve heard in the last few years, plus the children may have heard it at home or from someone else. You’d be surprised what kids pick up on the playground, from a friend’s older sibling, on the radio, on the internet.....

I also don’t think just because there is a GFM that it implies the story is baseless. I wonder how many posters on this thread are white and how many are people of color.

I believe that the white Christian boys bullied her. I don't believe the said her hair was 'nappy'.

She was pinned down by three boys, her mouth covered, and her hair cut while being told that she shouldn't have been born?
No, that's not extraordinary at all...

Whether extraordinary or not (and I think it is), that behavior is entirely unacceptable. The boys should face severe punishment (and not just getting expelled). It is assault and battery and should be treated as such.

This.

Let's wait and see what happens to this story. A shame that the NYT is making it a national crisis before the facts are clear.

You guys sound crazy. The white girls at my DD private school know what the word nappy means and use it. A couple unfortunately got punched in the mouth. This was just this year at Bethesda private school.
