Sorry for the hijack, but I think the question is whether it’s appropriate for the president to ask (or even bribe) a foreign leader to investigate the president’s political opponent’s family.

Depends. Did he ask in an official capacity?

My guess is no.

But bo Biden’s bullsh&t was definitely nefarious, so looks like we’ll have an investigation soon!

Are you on drugs? Of course it's not appropriate. In fact, it's using his office for personal gain. It's bribery. It's extortion. It's abuse of power.

Just imagine it's 1940 and FDR tells Churchill, "Hey, Winston, I'd love to give you these old destroyers to fight the Nazis, but first can you ask Scotland Yard to start an investigation into my political opponent's son?"

DP, but I want to add that the bribery remains bribery even if the son in question has done something wrong.
There is no equivalency here, because there is only one person in this scenario who is a President and using the President's office for personal gain.

There is no evidence.

Journalists have been on the case for months. Believe me, if there had been something to find, they'd have found it. Getting an exclusive on such a well-known politician would be career-boosting for a journalist.

Then why all this uproar now? If there were nothing illegal done by Biden in Ukraine, would it be helpful for his campaign if Ukrainian government conduct investigation and confirms the same?

LOL Yes so the president will provide military aid if Ukraine investigates and issues a report that Trump and the republicans approve. Hopefully the next president will do the same for Trump’s kids! I wonder what the Uk could dig up on Mitch Mcconnell’s children for a favorable trade deal after Brexit?

Not also, Giuliani was working in Ukraine in the 2017-2018 timeframe. In April 2018, he joined Trump’s legal team. In May 2018 Ukraine stoped cooperating with the Mueller investigation.

Coincidence?

Drip, drip, drip. Amazing that the GOP still rallies around Trump.

legations that President Trump courted foreign interference from Ukraine to hurt his leading Democratic rival, Joseph R. Biden Jr., dominated presidential politics on Saturday, as Mr. Biden demanded a House investigation of Mr. Trump’s phone call with Ukraine’s leader and as Mr. Trump lashed out, denying wrongdoing without releasing a transcript of the call.

With Mr. Trump seizing on a familiar defense, saying Democrats were undertaking a “witch hunt” against him, Mr. Biden called on the House of Representatives to begin a new investigation of whether the president sought the interference of a foreign government to bolster his re-election campaign.

“This appears to be an overwhelming abuse of power,” Mr. Biden said during a campaign swing in Iowa. “We have never seen anything like this from any president.”

Mr. Trump is said to have urged the Ukranian president on a July 25 phone call to investigate Mr. Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, who did business in Ukraine while his father was vice president. Mr. Trump’s request is part of a secret whistle-blower complaint in the intelligence community that is said to involve Mr. Trump making an unspecified commitment to a foreign leader, according to two people familiar with the complaint.

Seems as if Biden has something to hide.
Reports are no commitment was made by Trump. And, that the "whistleblower" didn't actually listen to or have transcripts to the phone call. The report was based on "hearsay."

Nope, but I am sure that’s what Barr has decided everyone should say.

Biden has nothing to hide. Sheesh, if you believe that, then you are missing the story and falling for the deflection.

Start with this: https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2019/09/21/why-is-rudy-giuliani-trying-drag-my-countrys-president-into-trumps-reelection-campaign/

And then read this thread: https://twitter.com/anders_aslund/status/1175203002870849536 I'll paste the contents in case you are too lazy to click on it:

Simple facts about the Trump Ukraine affair:
1. Viktor Shokin was prosecutor general from February 2015 to March 2016. He was considered close to President Poroshenko & was considered utterly corrupt. He did not prosecute any high-level person.

2. A prosecutor in Ukraine is usually a person who uses state power to investigate crimes, but after having done so the prosecutor goes to the culprit & extorts him or her, after which the prosecutor closes the case.

3. Mykola Zlochevsky is a Ukrainian businessman who was Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources from July 2010 till April 2012. He was accused to have inappropriately acquired gas licenses to build his current gas company Burisma. This has never been properly investigated.

4. Shokin opened a case against Zlochevsky but closed it soon. We may guess what happened, but we do not know.

5. In February 2016, Shokin's highly respected young Deputy Prosecutor, Vitaly Kasko resigned denouncing the corruption and lawlessness of the Prosecutor General's office. The whole West demanded his resignation.

6. "Bowing to pressure from international donors, the Ukrainian Parliament voted on Tuesday to remove a prosecutor general who had clung to power for months despite visible signs of corruption." (NYT). VP Joe Biden led a Western & domestic liberal Ukrainian consensus.

7. On May 12, 2016, Yuriy Lutsenko was finally confirmed by the Rada as prosecutor general. President Poroshenko clearly wanted to avoid Kasko, the obvious honest candidate. Lutsenko had started as a socialist youth politician and spent two years in prison under Yanukovych.

8. To general disappointment, Lutsenko did not do better than Shokin, while politically more skillful. He took another round on Zlochevsky & then closed the case for unknown reasons. Lutsenko did not prosecute any serious criminal during his 3 years in office.

9. That Joe Biden's son Hunter was a member of the board of Burisma was only a decoration of no significance. Neither Shokin nor Lutsenko had any credibility whatsoever as prosecutors as their dismal record showed. Joe Biden's efforts to oust Shokin were universally praised.

Add to it this information

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-07-26/pro-trump-super-pac-got-illegal-contributions-complaint-alleges

^^^ this article discusses an illegal Trump PAC donors, Igor Fruman and Lev Parnas who are part of the Sunny Isles, FL - Russian Mar A Lago Trump crowd that launders money thru LLCs to ?GOP? campaigns.

Wait, who is Lev Parnas?

https://twitter.com/ScottMStedman/status/1175152219328372736 <- that guy?

The guys who donates to GOP PACs and is under investigation currently?

This is all tip of the iceberg. Pay attention to the Whistleblower. The Biden thing is red meat to distract. At the time, as Vice President, Biden was acting in an official capacity and was widely praised by ALL SIDES in the US for his actions.

Typical Trump stunt, projecting a crime to distract and our media and people in this forum are falling for it.

It is so incredibly sad to see people who think they are smart and informed getting their news from one source - Fox/WSJ who are owned by Rupert Murdoch and have been casting division in our Repubic for decades.

Paul Manafort helped foment anti-American violence in UKRAINE while working for a corrupt political party backed by shady Russian oligarchs ,then Donald Trump hired him as his CAMPAIGN MANAGER and now he is in jail?

Underlying theme here, Manafort was working for the Oligarch against US interests. He is in jail. He was Trump's campaign manager.

Seems rather important to re-note that Hunter Biden had been long since cleared of any wrong-doing

If this were a serious effort, the US Department of Justice under international treaty, would have sent actual DOJ investigators to Ukraine to parse through any evidence in seeking justice.

The fact that Trump sent his personal attorney on behalf of his 2020 campaign, suggests this was not a serious investigation.

Also key, the reports suggest the whistleblowers concerns were not based on a single incident or phone call, but rather a patter of activitiy over a period of time.
