2019: What Did Your Kids Consider Safety Schools? Did They Get In?

He had a 1500 on the SAT and a 4.2 GPA with 7 APs. He applied to Pitt, UConn, Bucknell, Lehigh, and URochester. He was accepted at all and chose Lehigh.

Lehigh? Really?

Lehigh? Really?

Lehigh has a FANTASTIC engineering school and finance program- very well represented on Wall Street. Why are you incredulous?

What year was that? Things are changing quickly it seems.

Boy is that true. My rising fourth year at UVA would not get in today based upon the SCHEV statistics. A 4.25 and 33 ACT puts you in the average median entering class today.

Do you know anything about Lehigh? Beautiful campus, strong programs, great job placement at major firms in NYC and Philadelphia, high starting salaries, and a very wealthy and loyal alumni network. I wish my daughter was interested in it, but she wants a big football type school.

I would choose Lehigh too

About 3.9 at a DC private with no ranking, 1550 SATs - Admitted to her foundation/safety schools - Scripps, in-state UVA - as well as her matches and reaches.

Will apply to Pitt rolling admission at the beginning of the school year as the school. We can afford it and they will almost certainly get in (my definition of a true safety). And if they are rejected, we will know in time to recalibrate. Wooster and St. Olaf as likely. Matches include CWRU (arts and sciences, not engineering), Kenton, Oberlin, Macalaster, WM.

Not likely to do reaches. Does not want UVA, and we can’t afford private w/o merit aid.

Kid should at least apply to UVA then. This is nuts.

Why is it nuts if he/she does not want to go there?

Maybe. But with those stats you would think this student could’ve done better.

Things have changed dramatically—-rise in applications has elevated competition at all schools...

Take her to the Lehigh - Lafayette football game this fall and see if that changes her outlook!

Can you tell us what other schools she applied to? Thanks!

UVA won't enroll this high and thats what really matters.

What do you mean? The median GPA for top 25% of entering class last fall was a 4.48, median was a 4.33 and bottom 25% of the entering class was a 4.16.
The median top 25% ACT was a 34. Median 50% was a 32. This is an iffy candidate for UVA. And these are ENTERING scores, not accepted scores, which are higher. http://research.schev.edu//enrollment/B10_FreshmenProfile.asp

Lehigh had a 22% acceptance rate last year. That doesn’t sound like an easy admit.
It sounds like he didn’t apply to any super reach schools, so he likely knew what he was looking for and was wise about the process.

She was also admitted to BC honors program, Middlebury and UCLA. Denied at Carlton (we didnt visit, silly to apply really), Princeton and Tufts. Her likely was University of Vermont; she was admitted to UVM in late Jan/early feb. it was a good thing to have one in her pocket.

It’s Carleton, not Carlton.
