I agree with this. Small businesses should be supported and encouraged, but we also need larger, established companies with stable workforces. I know a bunch of "tech" people, computer scientists, etc., and they all work in VA, because that's where all the tech firms are. These are the types of high-paying, stable jobs that we need more of in MoCo. |
PP here.. yes.. I'm in IT. I don't want to move to VA, but that seems to be where a lot of the high tech jobs are. I have talked to my spouse about moving to VA. I really really don't want to, but I also don't want a 2+ hours commute to my work. Even going into DC from where I live in MoCo would take me about 2 hours/day. I value family time. |
I agree with all of this. It’s hard enough to get businesses to locate in Maryland vs. Virginia. Let’s not make it worse. |
Floreen's got my vote. |
| Ultra-high-density is the wave of the future for Bethesda. Single family homes with lawns and driveways are dinosaurs, and will be the slums of the future. Millennials don't want to mess with lucky lawn chemicals or cut grass, or have a big inefficient house. Small efficiency condos on top of mixed retail is the future. Embrace change or get left on the garbage dump of history. |

I don't like any of the three candidates much (voted for Blair in the primary) but I voted for Elrich yesterday.
-Ficker is a non-starter. He has been arrested for assault, disbarred and lacks the professionalism and temperament one would want to see in a County Executive. -I am a parent, and Floreen has been a friend to real estate developers not to schools. When the Bethesda Plan was being debated, she would not allow a hearing on school overcrowding (even though the schools in the area are all 125% over capacity at the time the plan was being debated) and used procedural maneuvers to ensure the Plan would go through quickly. I also think it's obnoxious that she avoided running in the primaries like the rest of the interested candidates, and is using a loophole to run now. -Erlich doesn't take contributions from real estate developers and used to be a teacher. Yes, he's more lefty than I am, but he's the best of the three. |
| ^this is how I feel as well. |

"Millennials don't want to mess with lucky lawn chemicals or cut grass, or have a big inefficient house. Small efficiency condos on top of mixed retail is the future."
Sure, but when those millennials get married and have kids, they want a yard for the kids to play in. And when those kids have soccer practice/fencing/theater rehearsal/football/violin/etc. to get to, they buy cars to get them there. And it will he too late: Bethesda and the like will have turned into Crystal City (aka Cement City) with no green space, no parks, to much traffic, etc. |
I'm another Blair voter who just voted for Elrich yesterday. I'm not against downsizing and more compact living myself, but remember that more residents in very tight spaces still have needs. They need to get to work. Their kids need to go to school. They need outdoor space to relax or play. Someone needs to pay for these burdens. "Expanding the tax base", a favorite expression of the Floreen campaign, is one way to do it, but this tax base must include real estate developers AS WELL AS other businesses, small and large. It only makes sense that the industry that profits the most from bringing in new residents that create the increased demand for these services. The more that real estate development gets squeezed just enough to help pay for these needs, the less of the burden will be on small businesses and property taxes. |

Here's what I don't understand about any of the MoCo Exec threads:
If Marc Elrich is a NIMBY who wants to protect segregation/exclusionary white homeowners, Then why is the bulk of his support from Silver Spring and high-density urban downcounty areas, whereas (at least in the primary) he did worst in Potomac, which has ... exclusionary white homeowners? |

OP
It sounds like you want to vote for Elrich and you know that and you just want to troll us. Everyone else do NOT vote for Marc Elrich. He is a DISGUSTING FAT SOCIALIST and he LITERALLY wanted to take advice from the government of VENEZUELA when he first got elected. Read this: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/10/11/AR2007101102217.html I wish Marc Elrich would move to Venezuela. He will find out what socialism is really like, and he would lose some weight, because everyone these is STARVING because socialism DOES NOT WORK. I bet when he comes back from a holiday in Venezuela he will be less fat and less socialist. |
I agree with this too and I think a majority of residents agree. The question is WHO will work for this? |
When you say something in ALL CAPS it is VERY CONVINCING. |
It seems like Floreen more so than the others. Flicker is nutty and Elrich is too left wing to encouraged job growth here. And when I say job growth I mean growth in high paying jobs. |
Stop talking out of your a$$. Lots of "socialist" countries are happy, like the Scandinavian countries that typically are in the top 10 happiest countries in the world. -signed a former R and Floreen voter PS And if you want to talk obesity, well, Trump is a fat nationalist. |
