RCES was originally built to serve the then newly built Kentlands. Including Lakelands makes sense, but people are discussing the reasons behind bussing kids in from Governor Square Apts, despite RCES being several miles from that apt complex. |
RCES is not Kentlands (and Lakelands) ES. All students who are within the boundaries are within the boundaries, whether they live in Kentlands, or Lakelands, or anywhere else within the boundaries. |
I get that. The point people are making is that MCPS busses kids to RCES who live closer to other elementary schools. For example, Governor Square Apts is across the street from Fields Road ES, and yet those kids go to RCES. There are reasons for that, and people were discussing them. |
MCPS busses kids to RCES from Lakelands, too. http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/transportation/busroutes/02159bus.pdf Also, which street are the Governor Square apartments across from Fields Road ES from? There is no reason to expect that every child will go to the elementary school closest to their home. |
RCES is at most a 15 min walk from any portion of Lakelands. Governor Sq Apts is a 3 min drive (admittedly not technically across the street, but on the other side of Muddy Branch Rd) from Fields Road. MCPS made a decision to include that neighborhood in the RCES boundaries. It’s not an immediately logical choice, suggesting there was some decision making process behind it. |
| I believe OP because it is being discussed on our neighborhood listserve and we are zoned for QO. |
Yes, there was, and here it is: http://gis.mcpsmd.org/boundarystudypdfs/BoundaryProcess_BriefDescriptionFeb2016.pdf |
| The letter is disgusting, but posting on DCUM to warn QO parents is silly. There are almost 2000 students at QO. How do you want us to change our behavior or thoughts because of one parent out of 2000? |
I wonder why they bring them out of the way to the school even though it is already so overcrowded. Why not Dufief which is under enrolled? |
Heck if I know. RCES was at or above capacity as soon as Lakelands was built. Why MCPS decided to add more kids to the school, when multiple ES’s in the area had capacity, is just illogical. |
| I am a Ridgeview parent and I also received this anomoyous letter. It is very disturbing and full off racist rants. I have a feeling it is a PTA parent and it was sent to all the families that had their address listed because PYA members received a school directory back last fall. How else could someone have families addresses. |
It must be true if the letter went out “in this area” and people “in this area” are trying to defend the letter |
Maybe because the Wootton mothers are the ones who keep going on about being fair to FARMs but then they refuse to allow them in their schools... |
In that scenario, the successful AA and Hispanic kids should be recognized just like the successful white and Asian kids. There is no reason to highlight or focus on their achievements to the exclusion of others who through no fault of their own were not born black or brown. |
The Governor Square Apartments are zoned for Rachel Carson ES because that was the boundary decision when Rachel Carson ES opened in 1990. There will be another boundary study when the Dufief addition nears completion. |
