Oh, but don't forget, our kids have a better "conceptual understanding" than they do...yea, right.

| OUrs have better EQ -- I get tired of hearing about the Asians. |
Many Asian and Indian kids do outside math programs . Ever hear of kumon, Saturday School [Chinese school, Korean churches ' courses]? They also do pre-teaching [taking the course prior to it being done in school]. http://talkinstuff.wordpress.com/2009/07/05/korean-inspired-cram-schools/ http://www.washingtonian.com/articles/people/6894.html |
| Yes, have heard about these classes. Lots of non-Asian families enrolling their kids in them. Have been hearing how great they are and how well their kids do afterwards. |
| Yes -- the children seem to do well in these classes. |
| We've gotten off track with the subject of this forum -- homework at Holton & NCS. It is sad the girls schools require more than the boys. And, afterall -- most men are still leading most organizations. We as women need to translate the hard work these girls are doing into creating more opportunities for them. |
| Agree, pp. Yet, we are never going to be able to do that unless we can be team players. Too many women on these posts, for example, are too divisive and don't want to see other women succeed. Very sad, but real. |
| Yes -- you are right PP...there are some really mean moms reading and responding to these posts. I really wish we had to include some identifying info -- then people would think twice about being so mean |

Let me say this carefully, so as not to offend. My DD is at NCS in middle school, and, while she isn't the top of her class, she's a strong student. She (and the friends I've surveyed) **never spend more than 5 hours a WEEK** on homework, at least not at home. They do have study time during the school day, and, if they don't need to consult teachers for extra help, that's homework time. What could this mean? Perhaps they've cut back so far that some kids are barely working at all. Perhaps there is a wider range of abilities than we expect. Maybe some of the 5-hr girls are doing extra-beautiful jobs on semi-optional work.
If you are deciding whether NCS is right for your daughter, don't worry about the homework burden unless it's an academic stretch, or unless she likes to write 30-page stories when the assignment is 2 pages. |
Excellent point. Some girls probably have a natural ability to do it all and do it all well in just a couple of hours, others might be perfectionists who are constantly giving their work another look and some might dilly dally or are easily distracted consequently needing to spend more time on daily assignments. |
| ah...my daughter is no dummie..she finished NCS 2 years ago...goes to an Ivy...did at least 5 hourse of hw a night from 7 grade on...hopefully things have changed then |
Judging by your experience, things have changed. Perhaps too far in the other direction! |
| 1 hour on average - not including study time and reading time on weekends which she really enjoys. I would not describe as a grind - when I hear of the "5 hour kids" I really have to wonder what they are doing because I'm not seeing it at my house and the grades are VERY good. |
| I think it all depends upon the nature of the school. At a previous school, my child would maybe have math homework once a week. Science homework once a week, etc. Now at a new school, there is nightly homework in math, science, English, music, foreign language, etc. Easily 5 hours per night. |
| Every kid is different and every school is different. Teachers love to deny the 5 hours of hw a night -- but it is the case at many of the schools at least in hs |
