10 year old just doesn’t care about period

also do not get upset about this she is only 10 be her mom buy her more undies that she will use when her monthly arrives

we all have the ugly period undies stashed away and teach her this

This. I started my period really early (I think 10 as well), and I had extremely heavy flows. It's because I had medical issues regulating my hormones...which ultimately was treated with hormone pills under the care of an OB and pediatrician. FWIW, in my case the treatment was progesterone, not BC...but regardless, you should only do this with a doctor who understands the endocrine system!!

Cut your DD some slack. She is not a medical anomaly by any reasonable definition, but she is in a relatively small percentage of the population. My mom wasn't a great mom in many respects, but one thing she really did a good job of was doing what she could to mitigate any stigma or shame related to my getting my period early. It was still really hard, though.

Buy more black underwear?

I preferred lighter underwear so I could see when/where I leaked. Sometimes I couldn't quite tell, and would be mortified if it leaked through my pants and I didn't know.

I also wouldn't be satisfied that the darker underwear was cleaned as thoroughly. You can easily see if lighter underwear is stain-free and you can bleach it to make sure. But with darker underwear, you may not clean as thoroughly because you can't see the stains as clearly.

Just my thoughts!

Ps. I also started my period early (late 10 or early 11).

Yes, I was getting ready to type this. Leaking on your underwear is a minor issues. Leaking through to your clothes? A much bigger deal.

Also a little bit of salt helps get the blood off quickly.

To clarify, if she is not able to really catch leaks, the lighter underwear is a way better tip off than darker underwear. darker underwear is just to save washing issues, but at some point, most women (I assume) want to know if they are leaking.

It takes a few cycles to figure out what works best for each girl. Stains will happen no matter what. We use a bar of laundry soap I got from the Basin store at WDW; it's done a great job of getting out stains.

I've been curious about Thinx for my 14yo.

What? 10 is very normal. On the early end of very normal, yes, but not “incredibly early.”

10 is an outlier. Sorry.

-said no legitimate scientific study ever

Wow. Are you waiting for scientific studies to tell you that your kid is old enough to wipe their butt too?

Poor thing, she's still so young. Set reminders for her to change pads and talk to the pediatrician if the flow is heavy. I got my period at 14 and still had some accidents at the beginning.

I did some really gross things like putting pads not in the trashcan when I was babysitting.

Help her. Talk about shaming a kid who doesn't know what is happening or how to handle! I remember crying one morning b/c my friends were going to the pool and I had my period. I wanted to wear a bad in my bathing suit. I know we discussed tampons, but it was a while before I used them. These are not those fun childhood memories I like to think about. And my mom was supportive and helpful. But when you're that young, at least when I was going through it, I was mortified and did not discuss with my friends.

And who the heck cares if she is an outlier? She has her period. What does being right or wrong on the statistics have to do with the question?

I think people are just being very sympathetic to a 10 year old having to deal with a period.
10 year olds are still very young kids.

I'm 50 years old, and I still get blood on my underwear sometimes. I don't bother with stain remover, etc. just wash them as normal. Yep, some of my undies are stained. Who cares?

When we were young yes, but 11yrs old is the country’s average so 10 isn’t an outlier. It usually has to do with weight. 90 pounds is the trigger for puberty to kick in. There are girls taller than teachers in elementary now and we have weight issues as a country. Not to mention pricesssed foods and dairy filled with hormones.

NP. 10-14 is the typical range, with 12 being the average age. My grandma got her period at age 8, in the 1930s...she thought she was dying, because nobody had explained it to her Some girls just develop faster than others, and genes play a big role. There will always be outliers, but 10 is not an outlier.

OP, her periods are probably very irregular still so she's not expecting them, and doesn't know how long they will last. It's so hard to be prepared.

You could simply show her how to rinse her undies.

I got my period at 10 and I was pretty upset about it but I was still able to play with dolls and act like a kid. It’s wasnt too bad.

Lots of melodramatic pp’s here.

OP— you are expecting a lot from a 10 year old. Probably too much. Agree with PPs. Help her make dealing with her period at school as easy as possible. Thinx, dark pants and thick pads included. It’s not like most 4th grade girls can go to the bathroom whenever they want and drag a purse with them at school.

Hygiene needs to improve. But deal with it calmly and kindly.
