McLean / Langley / TJ kids failure to launch? Did your kids move back in with you after college?

OP here...I was just posting what I notice. Now I better understand how the NOVA UMC welfare system works. Give your kids the best of everything, pay for college and let them move in until they are 30 to save up for a down payment on a house. You then proceed to degrade everyone and every school that is not McLean, Langley or TJ. No wonder most kids don't have a chance in your world. I can't believe how pathetic everyone here is.

Oh, puh-leaze....I don't give a f*** about any of these schools, but this is just another attempt to have an anti-Langley-TJ thread. (I wonder if McLean is happy to be included this time.)

Is this about kids coming home unemployed and not being willing to take menial jobs until they find a good one?

Is this about kids with mental health issues living at home while they get help?

Is this about kids living at home, not working and just partying and playing with their screens?

Those are vastly different situations. I would much rather my kid live at home for a first job, save money and be in a safe environment and have a short commute than live in an unsafe area and have a longer commute. This is incredibly common in Europe. In fact with the economy situation in some countries you have jobless young adults living with parents.

Get help, OP. You are beyond even the normal shade of green for jealousy on DCUM.

OP’s is what we call a strawman argument. Perfect example. Good on you OP.

Seems more like OP is a troll who fessed up when people lost interest in her post.

How elitist. What's wrong with a GS 11 job? It is where lots of smart post college kids start. The good ones move up quickly but no shame in starting there at all.

Exactly. I agree. I feel really sorry for the kids whose parents refuse to let them come back home. Seems completely self-defeating and stupid.

It’s just hard for the helicopter set to wean.

So you're the parent whose kid will be living paycheck to paycheck, barely scraping by after s/he moves out following college graduation. And we're the parents whose kids will live at home for a year or so after college, save up their paychecks, and then move out. Interesting.

FWIW,

DD lived at home for a year after college--then moved in with friends. Not at all unusual. She did not have a job when she graduated--although she quickly got one and temped until she did. She saved money so that she did not have to go into debt. Nothing wrong with a kid living at home for awhile. If they are staying in the basement and sponging off the family, that is a different story. DD knew she was not going to do that here.

It's only been a generation or so since it was the usual--rather than the unusual. My mom lived at home until she married. People lived at home because it was cheaper--it was economics. I have a friend (I think she is around 70) who turned her paycheck over to her mother and her mother gave her spending money. This woman was a college graduate. I don't think that was common even for her era--but it shows how things have changed. Economics.

It is impossible to get a GS-11 job right out of undergrad anyway, so the person who wrote that originally has no idea what he/she is talking about. You either have to have a PhD or several years of experience to qualify for a GS-11 job, and a master’s degree or experience to qualify for a GS-9. Kids straight out of undergrad can get GS-7 jobs with a bachelor’s degree.

The elitist people are these parents who inherit the house, live on a trust fund and make fun of all the schools that are not in the McLean/Langley pyramid. Then the kids just continue the cycle...living at home and enjoy the UMC welfare system.

I don't see anything wrong with kids who want to come back home and live with their parents to save up some money. As a matter of fact, I would encourage it. Because we as parents are lucky enough to be able to provide for them while they do so. I didn't have such luck growing up.

We don't know what the circumstances are. People have got to stop being so judgemental!

Live in McLean. Been here over 20 years. I don’t know anyone with those stats. I do know a few who live in inherited houses, but they all work. No one makes fun of other schools IRL.

Ditto. I'd be fine with my kids living with us for a couple years after graduating to save money, as long as they are working or seriously looking for a job, and being a good roommate. I lived with my parents for 6 mos after graduating -- didn't have a job at graduation but started one a couple months after -- lived on my own for a year but then moved home for a year to save money. My siblings both did the same and we were all on our own with solid careers underway by our mid-late 20s.
