Books that you found overrated

The Goldfinch. Ugh. I finally quit after 100 pages.

Yes!

Holden Caulfield didn't get nearly enough beatings in that book.

I loved these books, but agree that it was brutal to differentiate the names at the beginning. That's a common complaint. The books made me want to drink coffee all the time, too. I just love Lisbeth Salander.

Lisbeth Salander is a great character but the new books are awful. Do wish Steig Larsson had not died.

Agree, all of these sucked, and in a similar way.

Read it recently for a book club. It was a snooze. Have no idea why it was a best seller, other than perhaps every Jewish person in American felt compelled to buy a copy.

Really? I loved it, though I preferred another Potok book - My Name is Asher Lev. I am Jewish though.

I hated Catcher in the Rye. What a whiner.

I LOVE this book (I'm not Jewish). I have a copy, still read it over and over.

Previous mentions: I liked Secret Life of Bees, but just finished another of the author's books, The Mermaid Chair, and found it so boring. Eat Pray Snore- so pretentious and mindful of its image (just like the author!). I did like the movie though, so go figure. I generally like Jodi Picoult (and I like that she sets her stories in NH/VT).

Agree. The Mermaid Chair was not nearly as good.

Thoughts on A Little Life? I am not sure I want to go down that path, but it shows up on so many Best Of lists...

A Little Life is just too "too." Like after awhile it's just sadistic and unnecessary. You feel like you're being beat over the head with it. WE GET IT, JULIAN'S LIFE HAS BEEN MISERY. Do we really need a physical handicap AND an abusive boyfriend AND a pedophile priest AND child prostitution?

The Power. It is on EVERYONE’s best book list this year (you too Obama?), and I hated it. Found it unreadable. Same with The Underground Railroad.

I’m so glad all these people hated Hillbilly Elegy because I felt the exact same way.

Anonymous wrote:The Secret History by Donna Tartt. Many people call it one of their favorites, but I disliked so much about it. I hate books that make the future murder victim extra annoying, as if s/he has it coming, to mention just one of this book's sins.

Wow really? I love this book so much that I'm actually jealous of people who have never read it and are coming to it with fresh eyes. I think it's her best by far.

Oh! I just tried to track it down and my library network doesn't even have it. They had kindle access but now that's gone and no actual books. It's really strange. Maybe it's a sign!

I loved these books! Well written and creative take on magic. I read a lot of sci fi and fantasy and these are right up there! If you like this genre, try the Peter Grant series by Ben Aaronovitch. If you don't like those, you are not for this genre!

"Beloved" by Toni Morrison. I love Toni's work, but I did not like this book.
