It’s a beautiful university in a kick-ass town with good weather. So much nicer than, say, UMD, which has generic buildings in a dumpy suburb in a crime-ridden county. |
+1 same re our extended family's graduates |
Hmmm...we live in Atlanta. I don't think "very average" describes those who live here; and, believe me, we've got soul! |
| According to neighborhood scout, Athens has 25 % more violent crime than College Park. And that's the nice part of Georgia. The south is a pit. |
Hmm. Did the county in which Athens is located have as many murders last year as PG? Even if it did, Athens is still far more interesting than College Park. It doesn't get much uglier than Baltimore Avenue near UMD. |
Oh, here we go again. Of course MD isn't a football school, was that ever even a discussion point? Nobody thinks of MD as an 'anything' school. Not academic, not sporty, not urban, not surburban - just ehhh across the boards. This thread is about UGA by the way, there are plenty of other threads where the PP talks about the greatness of Larry David and Jim Henson. |

You left out
Sergey Brin Russell Marker Martin Omalley Carly Fiorina Kevin Plank Boomer Esiason Connie Chung Carl Bernstein Gayle King Guiliana Rancik Dianne Weist Etc... Without College Park and Google , the Universal Product Code, Watergate discovered, the Octane System, the Muppets, oral Contraceptives, Seinfeld, the Wire, Underarmour , the Hybrid Engine, Oculus Rift, the Jumbotron , weather radar, Sirius Satellite Radio... The country would be unrecognizable . Nobody would notice if UGA alumni never existed . |
Must be school is too modest because Compared to Georgia , College Park has more Nobels, more Pulitzers, more academy awards, more Emmys, more fields medals, much higher SATs , infinitely more impactful alumni , unmatched and convenient internships, a surrounding community with 25 percent less violent crime and.... Wait for it... More national championships including the top 4 most popular college sports football, basketball, woman's basketball and men's soccer. Non impactful , dumb, non athletic and surrounded by violent crime is no way to go through life!! |

Being a Graduate if both fine institutions this is not a zero sum game. Both Maryland and Georgia are attracting amazing students with crazy high test scores and grades. Both schools have been skyrocketing since I went there.
Athens is the best College Town I’ve been to and I’ve been to many. It has a great vibe with combines Southern Hospitality with school spirit everywhere you go. College Park is a beautiful campus and the town has been undergoing revitalization for the last decade. Hating on College Park is at your own risk as you will be missing out on a tremendous educational opportunity if you hold on to old stereotypes about College Park. My daughter got into UGA early acceptance with a scholarship. It is her 3rd choice and we are waiting patiently on her #1 choice which is Maryland. She couldn’t go wrong with either school as they are both trending towards being great. BTW don’t give up on Maryland Football ? yet with DJ Durkin bringing in Top #20 Recruiting classes, but this week it’s time to Call the Dawgs!! Anybody but Bama.. |
| College Park is a beautiful campus? Are you kidding me? |
College Park made it Athens didn't http://www.businessinsider.com/beautiful-iconic-college-campus-quads-2014-1 https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qT4nQ_ZKtEs |
I assume you haven’t been. College Park ironically has beautiful Georgian Architecture throughout the campus. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the actual campus. Haters gonna hate! |
The suburbs may be soulless, but the neighborhoods inside the perimeter (aka Atlanta's equivalent of the Beltway) are not. |
I think that PPs advice rings true for any large state school though, and really isn't specific to UGA. If UGA won't work for her because there will be less handholding, and she may have to work to find her niche, maybe a large state school isn't for her. I remember being a grad student at Michigan and feeling so grateful that my undergrad was spent at a small SLAC. I personally did not go to UGA myself for a reason. But your daughter can certainly get a top notch education there, and will have excellent opportunities after graduation. |
OP here. Thank you. This is helpful. And good luck and congratulations to your daughter. |
