Would you move to McLean from Alexandria if your kids are thriving?

If you are limiting your culinary experiences to restaurants in your immediate surroundings, that's a sad life even if you are surrounded by a smattering of top restaurants. Our favorite spots are all over the DMV, not in any one area.

We are in a supposedly less than desirable FCPS school and are very happy. Are the stats for the school as high as the "better" HS's? No. But our kids are thriving and succeeding. Our kids' stats are just fine. They're happy and I see no reason to "fix what ain't broke."

OP here. We don't know many families with older kids in our neighborhood. We have co-workers who live Mclean, Oakton, Vienna and DC. Half went to public. Half went to private. Strangely the better the private school, the worse college the kids attended. This is based on a very small sample of people that we personally know. We know a lot of younger kids and many seem extremely bright. We know kids from City of Alexandria, FCPS Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, Ashburn, City of Falls Church, Mclean, Bethesda as well as DC privates.

I wonder if it doesn't really matter where you live or what school you attend. I feel like the bright ones would do well anywhere.

We attend annual black tie functions at historic homes and buildings. These are frequented by former presidents and other contemporary men and women of distinction. these are people whose ancestors shaped this country and often can be traced to the founders.

Anyone that finds Mclean attractive simply wouldn't understand.

Wow! I'm so in awe of you that I want to BE you! I especially like your humility...

There was a recent issue of Saxon Scope published by the students in which the opinion talked about the elitism culture at Langley. Then a subsequent issue had another sophomore taking issue with the opinion. Her mom was extremely upset from the editorial. The parents that are hyper achievers and pushing their kids over the top never see themselves as part of the issue. They don't just start at high school, there are insane postings on this board about gaming the AAP and tests and lawyers and where to move. Things I never thought about and never thought other parents thought about. So I think OP would fit right in with the other moms at Langley. do not give it a second thought. but another option is rather than talking to the other parents, you might want to talk to your own child and teachers. somehow I doubt you would ask these same questions of the teachers and counselors.

Some quotes about elitism at Langley, Saxon Scope, page 16, April 2014

"Yet, the primary issue with many NOVA parents is that they're reproductive narcissists. They create copies of themselves in their children to vicariously relieve their glory days. Those very parents that drown themselves in their own success eventually end up rubbing their feelings of superiority onto their children, who unfortunately, crowd the halls of Langley, leaving us to endure their arrogance and silently wonder if we are the same."

If you move to mclean, note that the PTA meetings are held during work hours.

Most people have one spouse that doesn't work, and 99% of the time the spouse is female.

You're an imbecile. Old Town predates DC by a century and a half. Oh, and Alexandria gave DC its boundaries.

Enjoy your lack of representation in Congress though! Sheep.

Just think- if you hadn't finished that box of wine while sitting in your Italianate villa (circa 2006) this post just might be intelligible!
