Deal weighs students in front of one another???

Kids don't need a scale to know if someone is fat.

This parent coach is upfront and obvious about her neighborhood and that her kids go to public school, so this was Deal. Any other parents hear about this archaic practice? Have we learned nothing about the roots of eating disorders? WTF?

I had the "privilege" of walking on WI Ave behind some Deal 8th grade football players this afternoon. I am sorry for all the girls who need to be in the school with these boys. They went on for a few minutes on the "saggy titties" of the girl who was walking past them.

I recall being weighed and having body fat percentages taken at school back in the 80s. It was done privately though.

We had to track exercise and food and learn about nutrition.

My school did this in public at least through 1993, which is when I was in 8th grade. I don't recall it being done in high school. Definitely in elementary and middle school though. It was sex segregated and part of gym class. I think only at the beginning of the year. They'd assemble the girls in the girls locker room and everyone would hop on the scale one by one and the number would be called out and recorded. Even as a little kid I remember finding it shameful. And yes, even in 2nd or 3rd grade, all the girls would compare numbers and knew who was "fat." (In 1987, almost none of us were actually fat or even remotely heavy. Maybe one or two girls out of 50.)

They also did scoliosis screening but that was done in a handicapped changing stall one by one, at least.

This was a private school outside of Philadelphia.

"Horrific"?! Oh, please. If anything, this creates an incentive for the kids to become and stay fit. Nothing wrong with it.

If you ask me, there's nothing wrong with a little fat shaming, especially if it helps to reduce problems like child obesity. Frankly, the schools like other parts of civil society could use more shaming over a variety of problems.

Problem is (among other things), at that age, weight doesn't necessarily correlate with fat. A taller girl is probably going to weigh more than a shorter girl, and will get fat shamed even though she's not overweight.

Oh, please. I do not condone this behavior at all, but if you think the boys at St. Alban's (or any middle school in America) are immune to this of kind talk, you are delusional.

OMG! I went to Deal in 2005 and remember everyone being weighed in gym class together! Gym was separated by boys and girls, but I was so embarrassed that I weighed 150 lbs while my friends were much less. I still remember the day like it was yesterday. Can't believe they still do this!

They don't. Those who actually have dc's at the school have reported that they are weighed privately and the teacher writes it down without any grand announcements.

Ugh we had this done in front of everyone in school. Body fat % and weight and height. Same thing with vision and hearing tests. But this was a religious school in the 1980s so...

See what fake news FB can start?

Who cares? It's not like anyone can't tell who is fat just by looking at their pudge.
