Which begs the question why you are reading a thread about middle beschoolers and their weight, Humbert Humbert. |
| Now that we've heard from several parents, I think we can confirm that the original report is FALSE. Kids are weighed in private and their information is kept private. |
| Our 4th grader at a NW DCPS school said they were weighed in PE today. And height measured. He said that the teacher said it was a new DCPS policy. He said that everyone in the class compared weights afterwards during recess. |
DC has this information - it is in the annual school form. Why do they need to waste time in PE to do this? What measures are they taking to keep this information private? [DC has a history of disclosing information] |

If you ride the bus anywhere in the District, you can see that obesity is a problem for many of our fellow citizens. It is really a crisis. Often, this problem starts in childhood. If DCPS has some sort of new program/mandate to play a role in addressing this problem, I say "bravo". Certainly, it would seem to align with the social-emotional piece.
At the same time, we can counsel our children to keep personal information private. |
And obesity is an issue to be discussed with the doctor who filled out the form. Not untrained staff. |
|
I have a feeling you are the type of parent who "loses her mind" quite often. And you're probably overweight. If my child were weighed at school, I wouldn't give it more than a passing thought. |
| Well, it's probably a good idea to institute healthy habits -- as long as the numbers aren't available for all the kids to see or hear. |
|
I assume the time spent weighing the whole class was part of the time allocated to being active each week.
How many minutes are the kids supposed to have PE/recess each week? |
| Our kids have been doing PACER in PE for at least six years now, folks, including in elementary school. This is not new. Ask yourself why you haven't noticed it before this thread. |
You seem to have no idea what physical education actually is in schools. |
It is absolutely a crisis that we will all pay for in increased healthcare costs for these individuals down the road. We rely on the government to provide public education for the common good and I view educating children about good health no differently. For those families that would object to DCPS' efforts on this front, inquire about the ability to opt out as it is possible for sex education. |
OMG. When my kids all start imitating the annoying PACER voice in the car. Now that is when I will LOSE MY MIND. They have been weighed for years, never knew it until I asked because of this thread. The OP and mind loss parent are ones for histrionics and not cut out for DCPS. |
"Horrific"?! Oh, please. If anything, this creates an incentive for the kids to become and stay fit. Nothing wrong with it. |
