Maybe it's a health / nutrition class. I recall being weighed and having body fat percentages taken at school back in the 80s. It was done privately though. We had to track exercise and food and learn about nutrition.
My school did this in public at least through 1993, which is when I was in 8th grade. I don't recall it being done in high school. Definitely in elementary and middle school though. It was sex segregated and part of gym class. I think only at the beginning of the year. They'd assemble the girls in the girls locker room and everyone would hop on the scale one by one and the number would be called out and recorded. Even as a little kid I remember finding it shameful. And yes, even in 2nd or 3rd grade, all the girls would compare numbers and knew who was "fat." (In 1987, almost none of us were actually fat or even remotely heavy. Maybe one or two girls out of 50.) They also did scoliosis screening but that was done in a handicapped changing stall one by one, at least. This was a private school outside of Philadelphia.
