LAST APS meeting on new high school and countywide rezoning (4/4, 7 pm Yorktown)

Even if they're INCREDIBLY awful.

The decision to cave to those awful people hurt all of APS. Now everyone wants to whine about overcrowding at WL and Ytown ( due to incompetent numbers given to the school board from staff).
I feel sorry for the students, none of this is fair to them.
If I were zoned WL, I'd be looking at other options, including transfer to Wakefield.

Then you need to elect SB members who aren't politicians. People who don't go around making promises to whichever vocal parents are in front of them at any given moment, and who don't spend all their time calculating how to stay in office rather than how to do their jobs fairly or well. You know, SB members who DON'T stream football games at meetings and who, after eight years, have a passing familiarity with the schools in the system they control. What a joke. Why would we or should we expect any better. VOTE people. For real.

+1

That's crazy.

Ditto. Ridiculous. Parents really need to raise a stink about this, because from school board comments it sure seems like this is what they want to do. I get the sense that the district employees are sincere about wanting feedback but that the board has made up their minds. Easier for them to cram 3500 kids on one campus rather than go through the drama of redistricting into 4 school zones. But I don't want my kids in a grade with 800-900 kids.

some WL parents raised stink over the proposed move to Wakefield. any future similar proposal will face the same reaction and end up with the same result. so 4K HS it is (though i'm not sure why it's that much worse then a 3K HS).

This, to me, is a really silly statement. We are talking about increasing the number of students at W-L by one-third. You don't think that will be noticeable? Do you have high schoolers?

so you're ok with 3K but not 4K. why exactly?

You do realize there aren't enought current students in the wl school zone to get to 3000 plus or 4000 whatevet the number is. They said they planned to draw equally from other zones as well as wl to figure out who wd be in the stupid ed center. So don't assume this is just a wakefield thing.
Leave it to the sb/aps to come up with such a crazy asset proposal. Why are they trying to do so many things at once
They have not even demonstrated competence with a few things on a much smaller scale (ie., mckinley or hs boundary numbers). Aps has also bungled the extended care. How many god damn times do we need to sign up. Why 12 am? Seriously disappointed.

Oh jeez. I can't care anymore. We're moving to the Midwest. Boy, bye.

Updates from meeting? Will SB actually listen. Lots of opposition to ed center but rumour was it was already decided and all this for show. Ed center was clearly least popular choice. So many 'challenge' notes.

Late to the game here but how can w-l accommodate 4K students? In a neighborhood? all roads are 2-lane except Washington.

I am in shock (says mck parent who's in a general state of shock at APS and their illogical planning)

Virtual classes was batted about... considering the failure of online universities that is unrealistic.

Failure? For profit online learning is a booming business. 1:1 will have our kids more than ready for online learning. We have to be nimble and creative. Don't you want our schools to be on the first in line to embrace the future of education?

Haha, yes they are profitable. But most universities are seeing huge non-complete rate

If Arlington charges for those online classes and uses proceeds to buy enough land, maybe that would work.

What a complete load of crock. No one needs to be made ready for online learning. It's not a special skill. And it certainly isn't nimble and creative. In fact, quite the opposite, as you would know if you knew anything about online learning.

Consider: do you think Bill Gates and silicon valley elites are educating their children via online learning? The answer is no, they are not. In fact, it's de rigeur for the tech nerds to be pursuing Waldorf education--as anti-tech as it gets--for their own children, while continuing to push mind-numbing MOOCs for the rest of us. Instead of "let them eat cake," their motto is, "let them have iPads!" Meanwhile, their children reap the benefits of a creative, hands-on, low-tech educational experience.

Is there an update from anyone who went to the meeting? I sent an email voting for option B- a neighborhood high school at Kenmore. I just hope they don't expand W-L. What a nightmare that would be for all involved.

I didn't catch WHEN this will be decided, can someone post that?
Anonymous
I feel like it was a huge waste of my time. Next time, I'll just answer a survey b/c I'm pretty sure that gets as much attention as the notes I wrote on the boards.
Anonymous
I think the survey goes through mid-April, and rumor is a decision will be made in June. (According to my neighborhood listserv)
