LAST APS meeting on new high school and countywide rezoning (4/4, 7 pm Yorktown)

This is not different than the ArlTech program which has no gym no green space no auditorium no library no field etc. HB has no major school sports teams and limited field/green space in the new campus.

But you can't have a regular 9th gr academy without those, I don't think.

The state of Virginia requires high school students to take 2 years of physical education. HB students in grades 6-10 are required to take PE. I assume the same is true for freshmen and sophomores at ArlTech, though I have no idea how it is happening.

If a 9th grade academy were housed at the education center, would it be county-wide? If so, that would mean that W-L itself would have no 9th grade and so enrollment there would drop significantly, no?

ArlTech has a fitness ctr on site is what I heard.

No, it's a 9th grade academy for W-L ONLY, PLUS a choice program of some sort being housed in the 1300-seat building on the W-L campus--OR--a 1300 seat choice program school.

Yes, it's a fitness center. The students work out like you would at a gym -- weight machines, treadmills, rowing machines, some aerobics or yoga classes in small groups. Sometimes they do something different like learning tai chi.

Wow. Makes them sound like little office workers in training. How sad.

The 9th grade academy is just for W-L.

The plan for this option is to move all W-L 9ths graders to the new building. That would somehow open seats for more students being admitted into the IB program.

Anyway you slice it, W-L will be a 4,000 student school.

Feel free to not apply there then.

No the only way WL will be a 4k HS is the 9th gr academy. A choice program there won't.

Yes, it will still be 4K. The Ed Center site IS the W-L site. They will still be using the W-L amenities.

No, it's a 4000- student high school with one grade having most of its classes in another building. So a permanent trailer pod, basically.

Which is also not unique in Arlington

Are you talking about a 9th gr academy at Ed Ctr? That's different from a choice program PP mentioned. A choice program with non-traditional EC could work at Ed Ctr I think.

It doesn't matter whether it is a choice school or not. Whatever it is, it will have no gym (unlike all the other choice schools in the county) and no fields or green space of its own (unlike all the other choice schools in the county. Likely given the size of the building and the proximity of W-L, it will also have no library. Students at the choice school (or 9th grade academy) will use W-L for these purposes. That's why it will feel very much like W-L has 4000 students. All those students will be in and around W-L all day long.

Agreed it will be part of W-L for all intents and purposes. These kids will compete for the same spots on sports teams, plays, clubs etc, as the rest of the kids in W-L. It will be impossibly hard for most kids to get spots in these types of extracurricular which will impact them in the short and long term.
