Ethics is the first thing to go in an oligarchy.

Don't be dramatic. It's a plutocracy.

True. I guess only liberals care about ethics and honesty. Now we know, since the GOP stopped pretending

Their glorified Hillary candidate was their quintessential example of "ethics and honesty", wasn't she, op?

The question that always goes conveniently unanswered.

She's as honest as the average politician. On the other hand, I don't think I've ever heard a single honest thing come out of Trump's mouth. Never mind all his questionable ethics around his businesses and "charity."

It's a kleptocracy! And a confederacy of dunces.

I think this is sad, and it's something that people from both parties should be upset about. Our politicians alone shouldn't be policing themselves on ethics issues, anyone who can read a newspaper knows that politicians can do very unethical things. I hope that people abandon this strange tribalism that's overtaken their brains and complain about it when the government does something that's just wrong.

Well certainly, HRC nor the Dems in general tried to kill the ethics committee.

"Politicians are crooked! Run Gubmint like a BUSINESS!!" they howled.

Yet here it turns out the businessmen are even more crooked than the politicians.

Anyone who has followed Wall Street, or the history of industry of any kind, knows this is true. And has been true for centuries.

The shocking part to me is how the new office is forbidden from contacting the police if they uncover evidence of a crime.

Trump just tweeted against this!!!

"Trump on Tuesday morning called out his fellow Republicans on Twitter. "With all that Congress has to work on, do they really have to make the weakening of the Independent Ethics Watchdog, as unfair as it," Trump said in one tweet, adding, "........may be, their number one act and priority. Focus on tax reform, healthcare and so many other things of far greater importance! #DTS."

He's not against the committee per se, but that Congress paid more attention to this than other more pressing issues. I'm betting he's fine with them getting rid of it.

I don't think that's the correct read. He teamed up with Paul Ryan to impose some discipline.
