Exactly. As a former west coaster, I can say that neither school has anything in the way of an academic reputation. Both are known primarily as party schools for California UMC not good enough for a UC. If you want to pick a nice Arizona public school in a nice city, it would have to be Northern Arizona in Flagstaff. NAU > AU > ASU probably in that order. And none of these Arizona schools are as good as any UC, including UC Merced. Frankly, if you are looking at any Arizona schools you should just be looking at your own in-state options instead. Paying $30k+ out of state tuition is generally not worth it unless your own in-state options are bad and the alternative is only other top western publics: CU-Boulder, UC (Berkeley, LA, SD, SB), and UW. I wouldn't even include UO in that list. |
What's Minnesota's calling card? I mean it seems like the best MN students just go to madison if they want a b10 experience and pay instate tuition. Urban Campus? |
| I think Irvine and Davis are more highly ranked than Santa Barbara (except for Physics). I think SB's appeal for OOS students is more about lifestyle than academics or job prospects. Of course UCSD gives you the beach and the education/employment opportunities but it's harder to get into than SB. |
This is true. But if you are coming from out of state, you may as well be at what is still an excellent public university in a beautiful location. I don't necessarily believe that SB really hurts job prospects, unless you don't study. It would still set anyone up well for graduate school. I guess the downside would be fewer internship opportunities in SB, but the same would be true of Davis unless you had a car and could get into Sacramento for policy/political internships. I think the order is Berkeley, UCLA and then SD. But if you are doing science you may want to choose SD over UCLA. After that, Davis, Irvine and SB are all great options that each offers something a little different for each student. |
| Yeah, that's what I meant to say -- not avoid UCSB but consider Irvine and Davis as well. |

PP has a pretty accurate handle on the descriptions to be fair. I would scratch UW-Madison though. It's now officially a Trump School. The obama effigy at the football game and the wisconsin election solidified that. |
I went to Ohio State. It is very, very big. I really liked that about it. Something for everyone. But you do have to be able to be pretty self-directed. I was in the honors program so I got priority scheduling, which is very important. Many of my friends did not graduate in 4 years because of scheduling difficulties. Football is huge, although I was not and am still not very interested in it. But it consumes the campus and most of Columbus in the fall. Nice people. Columbus is a fun town that has a lot going for it. Terrible weather, especially Nov-Mar. Lots of gray days. |
