Why does the rest of the country hate DC?

It is so sad that none of these anti-DC posters see that many of us working at the FDA, Fed, NIH, or other agencies feel that public service serves a vital function in our country, and are willing to accept lower pay to contribute to society.

This. Thank you.

I work in the public service, and I DO appreciate that I have a job that is stable and gives me enough time for my family. I am also proud to be working on behalf of the American people instead of a money-grabbing corporation. I make less money than people in the private sector, but I am not jealous or angry, and some of the people on this board should try it sometime!

Ha ha! The federal government is a money-grabbing corporation, haven't you seen the news lately? Difference is, it's funded by tax payer dollars and not private dollars. Stop whining about how much less money you make, we don't care, you can get another job that pays more. Please don't sacrifice for us, we didn't ask you to. I do want you to have to use Obamacare though and I am fighting the have all federal and congressional employees to be on the exchange with the rest of us soulless losers.

+ 1 to having all the federal and congressional employees on Obamacare. I am so fed up with my fed friends and neighbors telling me how wonderful Obamacare is, as they enjoy wonderful taxpayer-funded plans and access to the best doctors, while I lost my great (and affordable) plan and am now paying a ridiculous amount of money for poor coverage and sub-standard care. They need to experience what we peons have been suffering with - which includes the financial sacrifices to provide free care to lower income - before I give any credence to their opinion.

Well said! I agree, don't care of your opinion until you are swimming in the same health care pond I am in, just don't have an ounce of respect for any of them.

Can you imagine if Hillary said that federal employees would have to go on the federal ACA program? She's lose Northern Virginia - and the state!

Someone that has never lived in or around the beltway really doesn't understand but that doesn't mean they are uniformed or their opinions/beliefs are wrong.

As someone that spent most of my life living in another part of our nation I found it enlightening as to how things really work when I moved just north of said beltway.

So, here is my take. And it is not intended as a blanket indictment.

There are far too many, being paid far too much, within, and for, government agencies. The system is out of whack when compared to the real world. Holding the golden ticket, security clearance, is almost a license to print money in some cases. And one of the big problems with all of this is how cumbersome that clearance process is and how it causes an unreal competition for employees who have one. That drives up the compensation costs and slows down progress as people leave one contract for another. If I had to pick one aspect that I feel was the worst it would be government contractors and contracts.

I'd rather her imagine saying that the federal health insurance program (FEHB) was available to everyone in the country!

You lose sight of the little things that big government does, like these crazy regulations, that affect the average person's daily life in so many ways and you don't seem to care. You will forever vote Democratic because you need your job and its' benefits and the rest of the world knows it. Basically, you appear to have no integrity, period. I overheard two EPA "workers", that's the word you guys like to use these days, right? Anyway I overheard them talking about the election while out at dinner and they said look, even if he wins we don't have to worry. He will never be able to untangle the mess of our department and we won't be touchéd. Invisible is the word that comes to mind, yes, government workers think they are untouchable. I don't care if its the nasty customer service at the DC MVA or my local postal carrier, they just seemed so removed from the average person's burden. I mean I can't imagine talking to people the way I have witnessed government agencies handling their job and not being immediately fired, in the real world we are not sheltered in our jobs, we perform or get fired. That's not how it works with government workers and there is a lot of resentment towards that sense of entitlement you seem to possess. And you know what, your post sounds as though you feel you are entitled to the respect for others for your service, please, you are not in the military, you are a f g leach off of the tax payers ass and you don't even have to use Obamacare. Understand now?

I believe everyone is entitled to respect, whether they work for the government, a major corporation, or in fast food. But this general lack of decency and terrible DC stereotypes is exactly what OP was talking about.

Government workers can and do get fired. Any of them with 2 Ivy League degrees could likely do much better in the private sector, regardless these stereotypes aren't true of a lot of DC.

If she could do better with her IVY league degrees, then why doesn't she leave? Because the hours and benefits and job security far outweigh other opportunities and she knows it and so do you. Shut up.

You're wrong. I'm not the PP, but I'm another like her. I could go private (and have been courted to multiple times). I don't do it because I care about what I do and want to leave a better world for my kids. Sometimes I work 80 hour weeks. I get paid for 40.

This is the type of evidence driven, respectful comment that really moves the debate forward.

Must be a government worker Lot of thought in your sarcastic response. Now run off and play in your second home while your weekend nanny tends to your little brats.

You're very misinformed if you think govt workers have second homes and weekend nannies.

Most feds wouldn't have a problem with this at all. Except of course for the closet Trumpkins, like the NY FBI.

Why aren't you fighting to have your employer pony for decent insurance for you? Stop complaining and organize if you don't like your situation.

Why would they organize? They're anti-union, remember? And anyway, the fact that the vast majority of health insurance is still through employers and direct government programs like medicare or medicaid would only further erode their moronic arguments, so down the memory hole it goes.

In this election season I've been totally shocked by the level of fury and anger directed at Washington, "the system", and even me personally by my hometown friends on both the left and right. They hate us. One woman I haven't seen in 20 years called me a cancer who would need to be removed once Donald Trump gained the presidency after I posted something fairly neutral on the election, the Bernie supporters were pretty similar.

Frankly my husband and I could have had more lucrative careers in the private sector like many of my college and law school classmates but we came to government out of a sense of patriotism and civic duty. I work hard because I want our government to function well, I had no idea how many people assumed I am a lazy drain on the economy.

What have we done to earn this vitriol and how do we change this perception?

How tone deaf can you get, PP. you are the very embodiment of why people hate the government. You work very little have paid vacations and medical benefits that are the envy of the world. Of course people resent you. It comes with, being a fed. You are a nice life at the expense of others who are not.

Jealous much?

Not really. I am a GS-15 at DOJ and DH is a GS-14 at HUD.

I'm self-employed. Before the ACA, I was denied converage repeatedly because of high blood pressure (not even that high, and totally controlled with meds). I love the ACA, and I'm one of millions who feel the same way.

Watching government grow exponentially without tangible benefit in the "middle".

Being told how and what to think.

Being condescended to because you chose to move to Detroit with your Harvard MBA rather than going to NYC or DC or some place "with culture".

How's that for a start?
