Why does the rest of the country hate DC?

I overheard two EPA "workers", that's the word you guys like to use these days, right? Anyway I overheard them talking about the election while out at dinner and they said look, even if he wins we don't have to worry. He will never be able to untangle the mess of our department and we won't be touchéd. Invisible is the word that comes to mind, yes, government workers think they are untouchable. I don't care if its the nasty customer service at the DC MVA or my local postal carrier, they just seemed so removed from the average person's burden. I mean I can't imagine talking to people the way I have witnessed government agencies handling their job and not being immediately fired, in the real world we are not sheltered in our jobs, we perform or get fired. That's not how it works with government workers and there is a lot of resentment towards that sense of entitlement you seem to possess. And you know what, your post sounds as though you feel you are entitled to the respect for others for your service, please, you are not in the military, you are a f g leach off of the tax payers ass and you don't even have to use Obamacare. Understand now?

I believe everyone is entitled to respect, whether they work for the government, a major corporation, or in fast food. But this general lack of decency and terrible DC stereotypes is exactly what OP was talking about.

Government workers can and do get fired. Any of them with 2 Ivy League degrees could likely do much better in the private sector, regardless these stereotypes aren't true of a lot of DC.

If she could do better with her IVY league degrees, then why doesn't she leave? Because the hours and benefits and job security far outweigh other opportunities and she knows it and so do you. Shut up.

Perception often equals reality. So change the perception.

This is the type of evidence driven, respectful comment that really moves the debate forward.

Must be a government worker Lot of thought in your sarcastic response. Now run off and play in your second home while your weekend nanny tends to your little brats.

Again, why isn't it possible to have a respectful debate without the Shut Up?

Maybe she believes in public service, the federal government is the nation's largest employer of both doctors and lawyers, should we only employ the ones the private sector would never want?

Maybe you just pointed out what is perceived to be a huge problem. Why should the federal government be the largest employer? What benefit is there to that? Isn't this just welfare for the rich? Why should my tax dollars pay for so many lawyers? Etc., etc.

One of the mottos of Princeton, my alma mater, is "Princeton in the nations service"

It is so sad that none of these anti-DC posters see that many of us working at the FDA, Fed, NIH, or other agencies feel that public service serves a vital function in our country, and are willing to accept lower pay to contribute to society.

Why does much of the country elect idiots to Congress?

So much defensiveness.

OP asked a question. And rather than even trying to understand how the rest of the country might view D.C., it is just finger-pointing and defensiveness. Is this how our trusted public servants solve problems in their day-to-day professional lives? If so, maybe we've fond a source for a great deal of government waste. Time best spent solving a problem instead being used to blame others and point fingers.

This. Thank you.

These reactions- if you are someone who didn't value education or giving back, or even weigh the possible value of living in a city with stimulating cultural options, try and check your envy.

OP is right that a civil servant makes at least tens of thousands of dollars less than comparable private sector employees. Some of you PPs are miserable and you deserve it. And the truth is there are many undereducated people in this country who are rightfully angry but need to turn a lot of that inward.

Many years ago, I would have agreed with this bolded statement, but not any longer.
Not when our government is 20 TRILLION dollars in debt with very little to show for it. Not when our education system is more concerned about the rights of transgender students than giving ALL students a quality education. Not when I read comments - on this site no less - from government workers who are disgusted at the lack of initiative and work ethic of their colleagues and they themselves don’t feel challenged or feel there is enough work to keep them busy (yes, a whole thread dedicated to this topic). Not when our government decided that our hard-working middle class citizens struggling to make ends meet should foot the bill for health insurance for those who can’t provide it themselves.
I could go on, but these folks in “fly-over country,” as some of you call it, have every right to be angry.

Funny thing is how many of the people who "hate" DC and the Federal government are working really, really hard to get/keep a job there.

This is the issue. If you started out middle class in the Midwest and managed to get an Ivy League education and law degree, then a low six figures job you are doing better than almost all of the peers you started with, they are jealous. They and their kids do not have the same opportunities that you and yours have here and that feels bad, so they blame you for their problems.

No sarcasm there. Only lots of thought.
