Are you happy with how you are doing or do you think you are behind where you should be?

Us: 36/37, two kids under 3yrs
HHI: 260K
401k/TSP: 285K
Cash: 50K
Home equity: 270k
No non-mortgage debts.

I only feel poor when I read DCUM.

HHI approximately 800 K

Net worth 12 million. (My wife brought a lot of that with her.)

Plus, government pensions from previous jobs.

Is everyone on here a law firm partner? What other industry can you enter with such a high income level after a government career long enough to get a pension?

DCUM is either an affluent bubble or its full of liars - probably both. Don't let DCUM distort your perspective. You are rich in comparison to 90% of the United States or 97% of the rest of the world.

HHI = approx. $100k
Net worth excluding equity = $900k

Plus $600k in net worth which OP arbitrarily excluded (yes, all that is growth), for a total of $1.5m.

We are early 40s with two young children.

36/42, 1 kid
HHI: 300K
401k/SEP: 650K
Stocks/investments: 330K
Cash: 50K
Home equity: ~600k across 2 houses
We have 2 mortgages, totaling approx ~4200 / month

I'm not sure exactly how to calculate net, but adding up retirement, investments & home equity is approx 1.6 M

I know that's not near some of the figures posted here, but I feel damn lucky to be in this position.

These posts are self selecting. I bet there are tons of people reading who are in their 30s with a net worth of 90k or 290k who are NOT posting; the ones who are dying to post are the ones who want to tell you they're at $5 million or $50 million at your age -- and often (not always) they throw in a line at the end stating that $4 million or $49 million respectively is from a trust.

the posts here talking about how 3m "isn't that much," etc are from trolls trying to get a rise out of people.

We are 48

HHI 160,000

35,000 in savings ONLY because we just sold our home. It will be gone in 11 months when we make a down payment on our new home. We just left DC.

No debt

My DH is an FBI Agent so we have pension plus our TSP. We max out our contribution.

That's it.
