Was this rude of me?

To the pp who asked what else was served- there was a salad with berry vinaigrette and a roast chicken with green beans. There was also some spiced nuts she apparently made.
I thought the food was pretty good, boxed brownies included.
This is only my second time at her house and she has always seemed friendly and nice. Which was why I was surprised at her reaction. But live and learn. People are sensitive about their cooking!

You were surpised that someone was offended by a rude comment? Maybe she overreacted a little, although the comment about Duncan actually sounds like she took it in reasonably good humor, but your comment was not polite.

+1.

Asking about the brownies is absolutely NOT offensive. I can't think of a single person who would be offended by that.

So either your friend is crazy and easily offended (quite possible). Or it was the straw that broke the camel's back.

Sounds like the kind of person looking to "mean girl". No thanks.

I agree with this. She attempted to take the rude comment in stride, and made a light joke confirming that she did use a boxed mix. You say she's friendly and nice, and she hosted you and some other people in her home and prepared a delicious meal for everyone, and right at the end one of her guests essentially calls her out for making brownies from a box. Her crime of "sort of rolling her eyes" at that moment was somewhat understandable, in my opinion.

Will you share your recipe?

You still have to cook them from a box unless you meant already baked ones from the bakery section of the grocery store.

Oh come on. She sounds like a "friend" you could stand to lose. SHE was rude for rolling her eyes at you. That's just nasty. Who does that to someone in their home?

Who cares if brownies are from scratch or from a box? I consider adding eggs, water and butter to be baking.

Seriously!!!

Op, you don't have a filter. Even in your description, your language is over-dramatic. Too coarse, a bit ugly actually. Work on refinement.

Pp meant that it still takes effort to bake.

Yes, perhaps. I think I'm pretty blunt but I'm curious- what exactly in my description makes you think I'm uncouth?

Not a big deal. Maybe a faux pas, but you did say they were tasty so there's the glass half full.

Not a big deal. I wouldn't ask because I don't care, but if someone asked me, I'd just tell them they're from a box. It's not like making boxed brownies is some type of code for snorting coke. Your friend d sounds like a princess.

Seriously, that lady sounds awful. I don't think you were rude op.

She overreacted. I love box brownies, and have been searching for a scratch recipe that tastes as good as the box (smitten kitchen has one).
