We have passports and would prefer to do something over next summer break. DD are 11 and 14

Japan - Tokyo, Kyoto
Singapore

What's in Singapore?

Personally - I would rent a home in a small village in Italy, Slovenia, France - maybe England and go there with knowledge of the place and live there - and explore what is unique about it. Shop, cook, walk, go to the town festivals, small theater productions, etc. Take a cooking lesson or class at whatever the region is know for and proud of.

Surprised at how many say safaris as they just seem like an indulgence once removed from reality but I guess I am also not an 'animal are magical' person.

It is not that animals are magic so much as a safari helps you see how insignificant you are in the grand scheme of things. I found this to be quite helpful with my DS (teenagers who previously thought they were pretty important). Seeing animals on the verge of extinction, moms fighting to keep babies alive, it is all pretty powerful.

Senegal, Gambia, Mali, Ghana, and Nigeria. I'd eat as much West African food as I could and still fit in my clothes, dance every day, and see historical sites like Timbuktu and the Door of No Return.

All are awesome, but after day 9 in Iceland, we'd done everything except shopping for the sake of shopping.

That was why my suggestion was Iceland + UK.

I've gone on safari and while amazing (I'm a big animal bad nature lover), the one issue for me was that there was a lot of sitting. My kids are very energetic so as we think about taking them on safari I'm looking into more movement possible options. Just something to consider, OP

OP Here. While our kids are energetic, I am not sure the safaris will work for our family( though, I love the idea of it. The reality of it has sunk in).
Thank you for all these great ideas.
PLEASE KEEP THEM COMING. We have a few months to decide. These ideas ( esp the various tour companies) have been so helpful in gauging budgets, etc.

IT IS SO FUN TO DREAM, isn't it? I love to plan the next vacation and all these ideas are great.

+1. Just check the weather.

How horrible is it in the summer?

The South Island is chilly during their winter. Still gorgeous though. And less crowded.

We are debating 4+ weeks in the summer vs. 2 weeks in the winter. Would also like to go to Australia, but maybe we'd need to break that into a separate trip if we go in the winter.

Whose summer? What months?

Sorry - 4+ weeks in July/August or 2 weeks in December/January.
