I love that!

I hate that. Way too busy and incongruous with the style of the house. Plus it looks dated to me.

You will love it eventually.

Wow I really don't like that. Anything you put against it has to be one solid color or it will clash. Even that vase against it is terrible. It's too crazy! And in general I think the textile choices in that dreamhome are terrible! The wallpaper in the guestroom is a travesty!!! You could lose a small child in there!!!

+1 We have these in our kitchen (complete with medallion accent tiles), and it looks very dated. And dark and dirty. /goes great with the dark cherry cabinets. Ick. I wish we could afford to renovate! Like this:

Yuck!

Sleek, clean, light reflecting is in. I want glass tiles like these:

This looks modern: http://hgtvhome.sndimg.com/content/dam/images/hgrm/fullset/2013/4/24/6/CI-Farrow-And-Ball-The-Art-of-Color-pg244_red-cabinet-and-backsplash_3x4.jpg.rend.hgtvcom.966.1288.jpeg

OP asked which is the most trendy -- I vote the metallic silver tiles. Tiles, unlike large hunks of granite, can be easily taken out in 10-15 years if you get tied of them.

Oh I like those glass subway tiles in the last link!

I wonder why they didn't put cabinets above the counter in that last link. Unless your owner is in a wheelchair, that seems like a huge amount of wasted space up there.

I like those tiles, too.

I have very soft and warm grey cabinets with marble countertops, mixed with creams and woods, very bright but not stark and not too cool of a tone, especially with the woods. I love bright kitchens, but do not like stark white cabinets.

We are doing a new build with no upper cabinets. Between the island, the pantry, and the lower cabinets, we'll have more than enough storage. I like the clean, open look of no uppers.

How about a solid slab of whatever you're using for counters? Or something complementary.

A neighbor has this in her kitchen.

I like it.

Really, what makes sense if you are planning on living in your house for a long time is to decorate in a way that you LOVE. If you want to sell in fewer than 10 years, live with what you have and refresh right before your sell with whatever is most popular at that time.

I've been considering alternatives such as wallpaper or chalkboard paint. Not sure if they are the hottest backsplash around, but could be highly personalized and easily changed.

Wallpaper is not easily changed and is a really bad option for a kitchen backsplash.

I disagree

NP: Maybe there is a brand new, highly scrubbable, non-peeling space-age polymer wallpaper on the market because wallpaper as a backsplash is a non starter.
