+1 We have these in our kitchen (complete with medallion accent tiles), and it looks very dated. And dark and dirty. /goes great with the dark cherry cabinets. Ick. I wish we could afford to renovate! Like this:

OP asked which is the most trendy -- I vote the metallic silver tiles. Tiles, unlike large hunks of granite, can be easily taken out in 10-15 years if you get tied of them.

We are doing a new build with no upper cabinets. Between the island, the pantry, and the lower cabinets, we'll have more than enough storage. I like the clean, open look of no uppers.[/quote]
