S/O Daycare is NOT SCHOOL

Your DD goes to daycare. Why lie to her?

Not pp, but you're missing the point. Those of us who call it school aren't trying to pretend it's not daycare. I used the words interchangeably, so telling my son to get ready for school was equal to telling him to get ready for daycare. Would you accuse your kid of lying if he called his tricycle a "bike?" Would call another parent a liar if he/she did?

Really, what's the difference to you?

And what's the difference to the child, what it's called?

Yes, I am sure the child learns in daycare but that is not the reason daycares exist. Daycares exist to care for babies, toddlers and preschoolers when the parents are away/working.

Ok. I won't call daycare "school", if you don't call staying at home "work" or your "job".

Preach!

hilarious

Exactly! I have never understood why the same people who get so upset that I might call my DCs daycare a "preschool" are the ones who insists that their being a SAHM is "working" or their "job" (and get upset if someone says they don't have a job, and list their occupation on LinkedIn as "household manager" or the like). Do you seriously have so much time on your hands and so little of substance in your life that your biggest concern is what strangers call the place their 3 year old goes for show and tell, a snack, and to meet other 3 year olds and learn the alphabet? Only on DCUM would anyone think that this is an issue worth So much of OP's mental energy, and apparent anger.

OMG. Not even going to read the whole thread. Seen it all before. Every so often someone starts a thread on this and I think, really?

Each and every one of you who actually care enough about this to be annoyed are snobs.

This is not important. At all.

If you were truly above it, you'd be above it, and you wouldn't be posting.

Where did I say I was "above" it? I said I was over it.

This is DCUM, where I get to say...hey, loser, seen this thread a million times. You are boooooring me.

It's so therapeutic.

Well Daniel tiger calls it school. Not preschool not daycare not childcare. Just school, episode 102.

I would defer to Fred Rogers & co. on this they are far greater authority than the hordes on DCUM.

Oh, and apparently SAHM are homemakers, like his mom.

I wish I had as much free time as OP to be kvetching about this.

Are they learning anything at their "preschool/daycare"?
Are there teachers?
Do they complete art projects?
If so then I would call it a school.

This post comes up every few months and I find it tiresome. I don't really care what parents of kids call their childcare situation, and if it is a nurturing, educational environment, why not call it school? Sure some of this might be goofy semantics related to feeling less guilty on the parents part if it is called "school" instead of "daycare" but does it really matter? I can see the argument that it builds positive associations with school/makes it seem more familiar when they actually enter elementary school. Also, most accredited daycares do have a preschool component once the kids get to be 3-4. But really, it doesn't impact my lives in the least what others decide to call it and it's not worth getting worked up over.

Daily, adults generally go someplace we call "work." Sometimes they get paid, sometimes they don't. Sometimes they enjoy it, sometimes they don't. Sometimes they make things, sometimes they stare at a computer all day.

Daily, kids generally go someplace we call "school." Sometimes its all play, sometimes they sit at desks, sometimes they sit on the floor, sometimes they have toys, sometimes they don't.

We're using work and school as giant general buckets to help describe our days to our kids. Who cares if the 2 year old is, or is not, getting formal instruction? He still goes to the kid place, which is called "school."

Who are these people going to "work" and not getting paid?

Not meaning to hijack, but come 10/1, it's looking like a big chunk of the federal employees (those deemed "essential"). Thanks Ted Cruz!

I got slammed on another thread for saying my 2 year old went to camp. It was camp! She stays home with a nanny, but we signed her up for a few weeks of "camp" which is what the organization labeled it. Why the &%$@&* do you care?
