S/O Daycare is NOT SCHOOL

Anonymous
My kid's day care has a preschool component. Once they're two, they follow a curriculum that is literally identical to the one followed by several well-regarded preschools in our area. So in your mind, OP, is it still a day care just because there are infants there too?

My husband and I usually refer to it between the two of us as day care, just out of habit. But my daughter calls it school, because that's what her teachers call it. And yes, they are teachers, who receive payment in exchange for reading to her, teaching her letters, numbers, Spanish, songs, etc. Seems a lot like school to me. At least as much as any other preschool.

My kids attend a church-run center. It offers both a half-day and full-day program, starting at 18 months. The teachers are trained together and the curriculum (Reggio) is the same in both the half-day and full-day program. The only difference is that the full-day kids eat lunch at the center, take a two hour nap in the afternoon, and have extra playground time in the morning and after naptime. Do my kids attend a "preschool" or a "daycare"? I have no idea. The church calls it a "child development center" so I'm confused. OP, could you also remind me again why I should care about the label when my kids are happy and my oldest was well-prepared for Kindergarten? I thought that was the most important thing, but maybe I am wrong.

I instantly corrected her! I made sure to SHOUT (the real-life equivalent of ALL CAPS) that daycare is NOT SCHOOL.

I wanted her to be aware how ASHAMED MOMMY IS of having the audacity to WORK OUTSIDE THE HOME TO FULLY PAY FOR COLLEGE, and that Mommy is TOO CHEAP TO PAY FOR A NANNY.

She now knows that anonymous Internet posters who have never met us ARE RIGHT, and that she should never call the place where she does art projects, sing songs, learn letters and numbers, play games, listen to stories, play pretend, and learn from people with degrees in early childhood education SCHOOL.

If she ever has the audacity to think that I love her or care for her well being, I will remind her that MOMMY ONLY LOVES MONEY AND HER CAREER, and is TOO SELFISH TO BE A GOOD PARENT!

I cannot stop laughing at this.

I was so close to laughing out loud!

Yeah, like, over and over again, "My two year old cried when I try to drop him off at pre-school." What bullshit.

The Holy Roman Empire was neither holy nor roman. Discuss.

Grow up, OP.

Anonymous wrote:OP, I'm with you, it's annoying and can be confusing once the kid is 2.5 and you don't know whether or no s/he is really in a preschool or daycare and it's relevant to the conversation. Moms and Dads, just stop feeling bad about sending your kid to daycare. It's fine, really.

Why would it ever be relevant to the conversation if someone calls it daycare or preschool unless you are a SAHM who really just wants to put down her WOHM neighbor? Seriously? Because you people are the only ones who care what we call it. We certainly don't, and if it makes you feel better about not having a career to think that we feel bad about sending out kid to preschool/daycare/hawaii, then that's fine. I'm sorry that you're so unhappy with your life that you have to come up with the dumbest reasons ever to insult mine!

Yes. Correct him. Drive past the neighborhood school he will go to one day and tell him "That's school. You'll go there when you are five." Give him that milestone to look forward to and aspire to and be excited about.

+1 And explain daycare is a different place where you are not schooled but cared for during the day while I do something else.

No, it's not. I, for one, will stand up for the crying two year olds whose mothers are baffled they are not into going to "school" at such a young age.

It is hard not to gag when a new mom at work brags about how much her 4 month old is learning at school.

It's better than hearing her plan for a natural birth for 6 months, I'll give her that, but it's a little much.

What if the daycare does provide educational instruction equivalent to a PK3 or PK4 program?

Well, I for one am going to start calling my kid's DAYCARE college, as it costs more than I paid in tuition each year for my undergrad degree.

If you had gone to preschool instead of daycare, you would have known this.
