. Do you have the same issue with AAs who straighten their hair? That looks no less ridiculous.

So AA women who straighten their hair look "ridiculous" to you, but AA who wear locs or other natural styles look dirty or unkempt, according to this thread.

Again, we're damned if we do, damned if we don't ...[/quote .
I thought that people were saying that caucasians with dreads looked dirty because caucasians have oilier scalps

There are AA with naturally straightly straight hair. No one naturally has dreads.

But the question is do you feel the same about AA that straighten their hair? What about AA that use real hair wigs or extensions that come from the head of another race? Is this cultural appropriation?

No it isn't, and numerous posters have already explained why, and the history of Black women and why we straighten our hair. Why are you so eager to ignore actual history and instead paint Black women as "appropriating''?

Clearly there is a history of reasons why AA women straighten their hair, but I don't see why that has to get tangled into current reasons some white people might want dreadlocks or cornrows, etc. They both are doing it for their own reasons. There is no deep entrenched history with these whites, but it's a part of their current state of mind or lifestyle. While that reason is not as historical or important or compelling, it's still a free country and they should not be dumped on for it IF they are not using it as a tool to poke fun at AA culture.

We are a melting pot/mosiac culture in America. There is appropriation of many cultures weaved into this nation.

I think dreads look fine if the person has dark hair, but hate the look on medium brown or lighter hair.

You don't have to be white/black to have naturally straight hair. My great-grandmother was 1/4 Native American and had jet black straight hair.

I'm AA and my hair naturally dreads. Not all over, but I do have problems with matted hair sometimes. I just have very kinky hair. Whites with dreads don't bother me though. I usually presume they are some type of hippie.

You just committed a micro-aggression!

As an AA I think people with out the appropriate hair for natural locks are pretty dirty and gross.
As an AA my hair will lock clean and health. I swear I've seen poop in Caucasian locks.

Btw there is nothing "dreadful" about natural locks

Yeah, Lenny has always been on my "hall pass" list, although only for a dirty weekend - wouldn't want him around for the long term. I like his shorter hair look better, but still wouldn't say no.

For white women? I think it looks stupid, but it's not my head so it's no matter to me.

Not concerned with how whites wear their hair.

African hair is tightly coiled and Locs without a lot of manipulation. It's worse to use heat (damaging) and acidic chemicals to make it straight.

Are you in the DC area? Do you maintain them yourself, or do you go to a salon?

I also get a lot of compliments on my hair, and White people always want to touch them.

They were started at Jaha in Silver Spring. I maintain my hair myself now.

So dirty on white people.

If dreads are maintained properly, they are not dirty. You cannot wash your hair for the first few weeks you dread them, but once they lock you can wash them. It is a myth that they are dirty. If they smell moldy then the person is not letting them dry properly after washing them.

You do know that wearing dreadlocks is not an AA thing right? Talk about stereotyping. However, I will answer your question. I don't think dreadlocks look good on anyone. They remind me of Medusa. Also, I can care less if white people wear their hair in dreadlocks. The way people wear their hair is their business.

Thanks! I have maintained mine for about eight years now, but sometimes I just want to treat myself and be pampered.
