I'm AA and think it's cultural appropriation. It also just doesn't look right on straight textured hair and I include my 1/4 AA friend in this. She has thin, dirty-blond dreads that always look like she just needs a comb.
. Do you have the same issue with AAs who straighten their hair? That looks no less ridiculous.
There are AA with naturally straightly straight hair. No one naturally has dreads.
But the question is do you feel the same about AA that straighten their hair? What about AA that use real hair wigs or extensions that come from the head of another race? Is this cultural appropriation?
No it isn't, and numerous posters have already explained why, and the history of Black women and why we straighten our hair. Why are you so eager to ignore actual history and instead paint Black women as "appropriating''?
Clearly there is a history of reasons why AA women straighten their hair, but I don't see why that has to get tangled into current reasons some white people might want dreadlocks or cornrows, etc. They both are doing it for their own reasons. There is no deep entrenched history with these whites, but it's a part of their current state of mind or lifestyle. While that reason is not as historical or important or compelling, it's still a free country and they should not be dumped on for it IF they are not using it as a tool to poke fun at AA culture. We are a melting pot/mosiac culture in America. There is appropriation of many cultures weaved into this nation.
You just committed a micro-aggression!
