| OP, ignore these haters. They're probably mad they don't have the choice you do. I'd personally go with Powell. The school is "hot" at the moment and the trajectory is upward. El Haynes has always seemed meh to me, but I'm bullish on lang. immersion. Best of luck and keep doing what's best for you and your family. To hell with the DCUM jury/executioners! |
| We were somewhat in a similar situation a couple of years ago. Needed to choose between Haynes and Bancroft. Chose Bancroft. Happy that we did. We treasure the dual language experience. |
| If your not happy at Powell leave. We are an incoming family and are applaud by your racist views. |
Cap City's high school isn't part of OP's decision, but thanks for the gratuitous potshot. That same ELH co-valedictorian that others so blithely make fun of was part of the school's first ever high school graduating class, whose entire class no doubt came from disadvantaged backgrounds and whose parents didn't have other options. And yet she was brave enough to put herself out there and take 9 AP tests even knowing she would probably fail them. Sure I passed multiple exams back in my high school days but it wasn't my school that did it, and I respect anyone who puts in the effort to study for and test for those things. And now she's is on a scholarship to George Mason. How is that mediocre? What exactly are you expecting? But more to the point, how does it help OP compare ELH to Powell by irrelevantly point out schools that aren't even part of OP's equation? ELH's high school, much like Cap City, or Washington Latin, is a work in progress but already tests at around 60% proficiency, ahead of just about every other non-magnet high school in the city, including Powell's feeder high school, Roosevelt (22%). To tell OP to reject ELH because its current high school students don't yet compete with students west of the park at Wilson or at limited admission schools like SWW or Banneker is silly. Isn't it more relevant for OP to compare ELH's middle and high school with OP's child would attend after Powell -- which would be McFarland and Roosevelt? |
OP here: Yes, thank you. This is why we did the lottery. We have 5 years before we're there. Seems like a long time, but isn't really. |
Lol--"mad" about not having to choose between Haynes and Powell? You clearly haven't been paying attention. The OP is choosing between two very average schools (and I'm being generous). No one with good school options are envious of the OP...myself included.

NP. You can say "generous" all you want. Fact is, non FARM students at Haynes are doing great. Their scores match WOTP. You can call it average if you want, but we all know that means that there are too many minorities for you. |

Nope, I'm a minority myself. I prefer to send my children to racially, ethnically, nationally diverse schools. However, the poverty rate (and the attendant problems that usually follow) at Haynes and Powell are too high for my comfort. You can send your children to whatever school you please. I would not choose either of those schools--that's my perogative. |
It depends on the year. In PK3, there is a very good mix of students of all backgrounds and races. But as the years go by, kids from higher SES backgrounds - and yes, many of the white kids - leave. Sometimes because their parents move to a different city, sometimes because the parents want immersion schools, sometimes because parents move WOTP or to the burbs. When you get to mid/late elementary school, the composition of the classroom is dramatically different. |
Link to previous thread please & thanks |

Hold on, wait a minute, a pro for Powell is its 82% Hispanic population and a con for ELH is a varied mix of races....
Why did this poster move to DC and Petworth at that. Go follow your neighbor over to Ward 3, and take the trix yogurt with you. |
