Cap City has a mediocre high school just like Haynes.
As compared to...? BCC? TJ?
As compared to any good high school--take your pick. Poor test scores are poor test scores anywhere. Read the link that was provided above. A school where the co-valedictorian failed every AP test she took is NOT a good school. I'd pass.
Cap City's high school isn't part of OP's decision, but thanks for the gratuitous potshot. That same ELH co-valedictorian that others so blithely make fun of was part of the school's first ever high school graduating class, whose entire class no doubt came from disadvantaged backgrounds and whose parents didn't have other options. And yet she was brave enough to put herself out there and take 9 AP tests even knowing she would probably fail them. Sure I passed multiple exams back in my high school days but it wasn't my school that did it, and I respect anyone who puts in the effort to study for and test for those things. And now she's is on a scholarship to George Mason. How is that mediocre? What exactly are you expecting? But more to the point, how does it help OP compare ELH to Powell by irrelevantly point out schools that aren't even part of OP's equation? ELH's high school, much like Cap City, or Washington Latin, is a work in progress but already tests at around 60% proficiency, ahead of just about every other non-magnet high school in the city, including Powell's feeder high school, Roosevelt (22%). To tell OP to reject ELH because its current high school students don't yet compete with students west of the park at Wilson or at limited admission schools like SWW or Banneker is silly. Isn't it more relevant for OP to compare ELH's middle and high school with OP's child would attend after Powell -- which would be McFarland and Roosevelt?
