However, I sure do wish that graduates of TJ, who clearly can get into any school they want, would stop hogging all the slots at UVA and William and Mary.

+1000

You wish UVA and W&M would put a quota on Asian Americans like some top universities are doing?

Don't worry, TJ's reputation and rankings keep climbing. In fact, FCPS is spending $90 million and the private companies and individuals are donating additional $25 million to renovate and equip the place. TJ will continue to provide the best high school education to the students that are lucky to gain admission. Just worry about your kid's school.

Yes, these students may be valuable to corporate America. Some of them. The question that I have is whether all of them are interested in science and technology or are they just pushed that direction at an early age in order to get into TJ (which is perceived as a big advantage)? Many students who go to TJ find out later that they really want to be in the arts or journalism or music or something that did not require a science education. I know at least two graduates like that (and one who is working way below what you would expect after many years and a college degree).

I think many students don't know at age 13 or 14 which direction their career will take.

Others don't choose it because they want a high school experience that includes a more socially diverse aspect. It's pretty much a personal choice. As it becomes more Asian, there will be fewer white kids who are interested in it just because an academic focus at age 14 is unusual for most kids (unless it has been pushed by their parents).

TJ is more socially diverse than many base schools in FCPS.

Regardless of how many racist white southerners refuse to attend TJ because of "all those Asians," the school will remain dominant in STEM.

I am from a northern state as are the neighbors on all sides of me (Massachusetts, New Jersey, Utah, Michigan, Ohio---just on my street). I'm not seeing a lot of "white southerners" around here. ???

I also notice that the Fairfax BOS and School Board are mostly not Republicans. I honestly see a pretty middle to left leaning area (voted for Obama in the last two elections). I think the STEM fanaticism has played out.

Which ones and what qualifies as "many"? TJ does not have a very high FARMS population.

You must have a limited memory. Obama carried VA by an extremely narrow margin, You and your neighbors comprise a rather small sport on of NoVA. Even if your neighbors aren't white southerners, doesn't mean that's not true of much of NoVA.

The fact that school leadership in one district is not Republican says little about the make-up of the general population of NoVA, which covers a rather larger area.

NP. He carried VA by solid margins. VA is a true blue state now in terms of presidential elections. There are pockets of Republicans in nova, but they are disappearing faster than affordable housing. It's like they moved to West Virginia or something.

The article looked at more than SAT scores.

Yes, I wondered what was meant by the term "socially diverse." TJ has an extremely low FARMS rate, and many of the families are doing well enough financially to afford very expensive cars and live in very nice houses. My child is a student at TJ and he has not met many kids who are from lower income families.

GOod try but TJ was already a top ranked high school before the majority of the population turned Asian.

.. Here is in 2009. Still 50% or non whites, but they don't play sports as shown in picture ??

Asians became the school's largest racial group in 2009-2010, at 46.38%, while whites comprised 43.63% of the population. In contrast, blacks and Hispanics comprise a much smaller percentage of the student body (<4%) than is present in the populace of the participating localities (approx. 10% and 16%, respectively).

I suppose it's is around that time families started putting more value in a more well rounded, and traditional high school experience.

I suppose it's around that time white families began to realize their snowflakes who "thrived" in AAP were not "gifted" and they didn't really want to compete with bright and hardworking Asian Americans.

You mean they do not want to compete with Asians who just memorize facts. THe white kids are out being creative....

Of course Asian Americans just memorize facts. That's why Asian Americans -- proportionate to population -- file more patents and are responsible for more scientific and technological breakthroughs than any other group.

NOVA is becoming less and less white and even less of that white is "white southerner".
