Drinking Wine during the 3rd trimester????

Anonymous
Not trying to be snarky, but I wonder if the wine drinkers ever experienced the trauma of a miscarriage. I know I had more than one, so I was not willing to take any risks whatsoever when I got pregnant, even if they were in the third trimester. I would have liked to have been more laid back, but I just felt that the life inside me was fragile. The only thing that kept me sane was knowing I was doing my best to minimize all possible risks.

I've had 2-3 ounces of wine on a few occasions during my pregnancy. (once I was past the really crucial time for organs to form, in the first ten weeks.) My doctor said that was fine, as have the books I've read. A number of my friends who've had healthy babies drank a little wine occasionally during their pregnancies. The research done on fetal alcohol syndrome points to frequent (abusive) drinking as the cause, not occasional use of alcohol. I think you have to trust your gut on this one.

On the PP's comment on miscarriages, I have the opposite reaction - for me the M/C experience made me realize how limited my own control is. I didn't miscarry from having a glass of wine or working too hard or any of the million other things that are now forbidden for pregnant women - the M/C was a product of fate, God, physical abnormalities, take your pick. So this time around I take all the precautions seriously, but I'm not fooled by pretending that overprotectiveness will protect me from the worst. I haven't had a glass of wine (yet! - maybe when I'm a little closer to the end), but wouldn't judge anyone who does.

My philosophy was everything in moderation. I don't think a little of anything is going to make a difference either way. I drank a little wine, ate a little lunch meat (gasp!), and ate a little soft cheese (double gasp!).

oh yeah and I drank an occasional soda or cup of coffee as well.

WOW! Some people really do have a stick up their a**! I believe the woman said specifically NO SNOTTY remarks. Basically if you are going to be a b**ch about it-keep it to yourself for those who need the bluntness.

Hahahah! This post is sooo old, but is good reading nonetheless. I am starting my third trimester and have had the occasional sip of wine since the second trimester (e.g., champagne toast on anniversary, etc.). Not a glass or even a half glass, but a couple of sips of my husband's when eating out. I figure, it cannot be any worse than the hundreds of chemicals and preservatives most people eat every day. I haven't been drinking diet cola, and have been eating mostly organic foods, so why deny in moderation. I would think nutrasweet is much worse!

Interestingly, when I was traveling earlier in my pregnancy in Europe, I actually had several people stop and tell me that a half a glass of red wine was GOOD for the baby and perfectly healthy. But no more....

I think having wine is FINE! My obgyn said a half a glass of wine a day is better than a cup of coffee.... so there you go... i have about 2 glasses a week. this is my third pregnancy. All health full term boys. my eldest is 5 and smart as a whip. as long as you are responsible and know your body and have spoken with your doctor, i think it is fine.

Lookout! You'll ignite the soapbox crowd.

I believe that one glass of wine is no more harmful than the food we eat everyday, full of chemicals. Anyone who doesn't eat fully organic food and drink filtered water really has no right to judge a woman who has a glass of wine during pregnancy.

I had a few sips with food on an infrequent basis during the third trimester. There are a LOT of less healthy things to do (including diet or regular soda, junk food, not exercising, etc.)

I haven't been drinking at all (I'm 8mo), but I seriously had a craving for red wine about 2 weeks ago. (DH and dinner guests had a bottle...) I just HAD to have a few sips. I was having trouble with heartburn at the time and nothing I ate felt good or tasted good. So, a few sips of a tasty Sirah and I was content. Maybe its just me, but I found it a great way calm myself and satisfy the awful heartburn taste/feeling.
