I got so stressed when my sister died at 35 weeks that my OB said it was her strongest advice to have a bit of wine before bed every night to relax me bc i was off the wall with stress. It really helped! i honestly hate wine so i had to choke it down but it rlly helped a lot.
The person who made the cigarette crack needs to can it if you dont have something nice to say dont say it at all. Cigarettes are the worst thing you can do during pregnancy. They can treat alcohol addiction, and drug addiction in a newborn but not nicotine addiction. So the reference wasnt even relevant even if you DID drink like a fish and your baby came out addicted. |
I wouldn't do it at all. |
I've had two glasses of wine per week (or two beers) with the approval of my midwives since the second trimester. Did the same with my first child. |
I'm on pg #3 and have had about one glass of wine per week starting in my second tri - now 22 weeks. In my first pregnancy, when struck by pre term labor, my german OB told me to drink wine to help relax my uterus. I did the same with baby #2, have had no issues. |
People post these kinds of questions all the time. Can I eat deli meat? Anonymous said she ate it and her baby didn't get listeria. Can I eat sushi? Anonymous ate lots of sushi and she has a healthy baby. Can I color my hair? Can I go in a tanning bed? Etc, etc. I understand why people might post the question, to see if anyone else does these things and/or to see if anyone can point to studies, doctors' advice that might be helpful, etc, but I don't understand the logic of posters who respond with "I don't know if it's ok, but I did it and my baby turned out perfect." How does that demonstrate that the behavior is safe? Maybe you just got lucky, or maybe you don't know yet what the ill effects were. Why not look for real research on these issues and talk to medical professionals? It's not like you're getting a good statistical sample on here. I mean, my siblings and I never rode in carseats, and we're fine. So I guess it's ok to let your baby ride without a carseat every now and then. You're probably not going to get into an accident that day - my mom never did. I don't equate having a glass of wine with not putting your baby in a carseat, but you see the point - why rely on anecdotes from a few anonymous posters in making important health decisions? |
Thank you for this very wise and gentle post. I had a miscarriage and agree with you -- we have to allow ourselves and each other to find peace where we can. |
I had wine with both my boys and they are both fine. I felt more comfortable waiting until the third trimester. Don't believe the hype. If you believed everything you read, you would be limited to drinking bottled water and eating all organic food. Good luck! |
To all you rude people! Didn't you read what she wrote!! No snotty remarks!!! It's just a question and I'm sure 1/2 glass of wine will not do anything at all. Like your so perfect!! So quick to judge. A small amount of wine will do no harm. My doctor told me to ge home and drink a can of beer when I was pregnant and very constipated! |
Another thread about harassing pregnant women.
Has anyone mentioned the dangers of eating mcDonalds while pregnant? |
I will have only a half a glass now and then. The baby's brain is developing in the last trimester and excessive alcohol consumption has been linked to mental retardation in fetal alcohol syndrome - so I would really limit my intake. |
I think a lot of the hsyteria around this issue should be resolved by actual data. There is an a post today on the NYT Motherlode blog about a study of 11,500 births in Britain early this decade, which found that the children of women who drank LIGHTLY during pregnancy (1-2 drinks per week) did not do any worse, and actually had slightly better results, on cognitive tests at age 5. The children of women who drank more than "lightly" had lower scores.

The original post was from 2008. For Pete's sake, the kid is two years old now. |
Not sure if anyone has posted this new study and I don't have time to go through the past 6 pages but I think the major point is, moderation is key:
