Why isn't MCPS redistricting Rachel Carlson

They keep Gov Square there because of diversity issues. Trying to be politically correct instead of just placing the closest kids to the school. They do the same thing in other districts too.

My kids are supposed to go to Ritchie Park in the upcoming years but I am going to put in a request for Cold Spring. We live in walking distance to that school and but would get a bus to Ritchie Park. Cold Spring is under capacity. Only 30 kids for the entire K class. Ritchie Park has 100. It is a no brainer for me. I can see them denying it though so I have to come up with a "reason."

Good luck with this...you better come up with a really good reason. No way are they just allowing you to send your kids to cold spring because you want to. COSA's are routinely denied, especially when you ask to move from a "lesser" school to a "better" school.

12:56, RP is not a lesser school than Cold Spring. You are an idiot.

Rachel Carson is in Gaithersburg.

You must be a blast at parties!

Yes, I am a lot of fun at parties!

What's depressing is that so many people apparently have never heard of Rachel Carson -- the person, not the school.

I don't think it is, that is why it is in quotes. But moving from the rm cluster to the wootton cluster will be seen as a ploy to the COSA people. And the poster even said she didn't have a reason, other than she wanted to Go to cold spring.

NP - I am at RP and I know of at least 4 people that were able to get a COSA to Cold Spring. 1 for behavioral issues, 1 for transportation issues (they could walk to CS), 2 for daycare issues. All but 1 were approved the first time. 3 of them were awhile ago when the schools weren't so lopsided and 2 went on to JW and didn't apply for Cabin John since it is a haul. Another went to private school.

If RP wasn't so crowded, I firmly believe the school is better. More room, a separate gym and cafeteria instead of an all-purpose room, and the most important is no open classrooms. They are awful at CS.

They make it absolutely clear you do not get a pass into middle school, especially if your issues was transportation or daycare. No one is trying to get their way into Wootton and since they don't go to Frost (which they should) but go far away to Cabin John, it is not ideal for parents anyway.

I have a BETTER idea. Why don't you stop moving into areas that are zoned for Rachel Carson Elementary School???? You know going in that the school is over capacity; yet, somehow expect the opportunity to go to another school, such as the one my child is zoned for (Dufief) while still enjoying the amenities in a neighborhood YOU chose to live in. Do your research before buying property. And I don't want your kid going to my child's school and making her school overcrowded. Such silliness and entitlement.

PP. I somewhat agree with you, only in that people are not researching the school capacity issues along with the tests scores. Look out though, RCES kids might be coming! Check it out:

I don't think it's entitled to want your child to go to a school that isn't over capacity. It's what you want, after all. Do you think that makes you entitled?

I don't think it is entitled to expect the county to give some thought the redistricting given the current inequitiies within very small areas.

This is 23:54. It is a sense of entitlement. You are enjoying a nicer than average lifestyle in the zone that typically feeds to RC. The bottom line is you don't want to give up your neighborhood and latte drinking-yoga pants wearing Stepford neighbors in order to move to another neighborhood where the zoned school is not at full capacity. Meanwhile me and MY neighbors chose to buy in the neighborhood zoned for Dufief because we know it is a good school that is small and not over crowded. That was a big selling point for us. I can't believe how much you guys scoff at "those children" being bused in when you are essentially seeking to do the same thing to another elementary school. Your choices are to MOVE or just deal with it.

What I don't get is why the county doesn't do a better job of planning ahead. They knew these communities were being built and had to at least have a sense of how many kids would be added to the school system. After all they had to approve the construction. They could have zoned better or prepared for overcrowding at some schools. I know it is not an exact science but their planning is way off the mark in a lot of clusters.
